The significant side effect my doctor mentioned was that some people get a rash.

The document from the pharmacy (Rite Aid) says under side effects:

stomach upset
nausea
diarrhea
unusual taste
acute gouty attacks or drowsiness may occur as body adjusts to this medication

A long list of highly unlikely but serious symptoms (tell doctor immediately).

And this heartening warning:

  • "This drug may rarely cause very serious (possibly fatal) allergic reactions. Stop taking allopurinol and seek immediate medical attention if any of these allergic reaction symptoms occur: skin rash, hives, itching, swelling (especially of the lips or mouth), dizziniess, pain when uriniating, blood in the urine, unusual eye redness/pain, fever and chills, muscle/joint pain, trouble breathing."

I was taking this for a year or so and it was always making me tired. I started taking Tricor for my cholesterol and it stopped all my gout attacks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by D1hamby (talkcontribs) 12:02, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

Fixed a few problems:

  • Revision 344565878 by 125.60.240.216 removed the word "not" from "Because allopurinol is not a uricosuric..." But that doesn't make sense; see uricosuric.
  • Revision 344565770 by the same IP address changed the word "severe" to "nothing" in "Allopurinol can cause severe pancytopenia..." That doesn't make sense, and it's not even a grammatical sentence.
  • The reference to the Dalbeth Stamp article was garbled - it had a chunk of repeated text from this article pasted into the middle of it.
