[edit] Day of Immunology

Why was the international Day of Immunology deleted as a "nonsense holiday" while the international Day of Dance is allowed? Sad mouse (talk) 15:45, 28 April 2008 (UTC) http://www.dayofimmunology.org

The listing for the Day of Immunology did not link to a supporting article. It wasn't nonsense, it was just unsupported - but I can see where the removing editor would call it nonsense since it wasn't mentioned in the linked article. Also, from the link you provide, there is no indication that this event will occur on the same date each year, which is a requirement for listing. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 16:50, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
They should have assumed good faith, discussed it on this page or looked through my history of editing immunology topics without vandalism. It has been on the same day, April 29th, for the past three years, which seems to fit the requirement for listing. I've added it to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immune_system#History_of_immunology rather than create an entire page for it. Sad mouse (talk) 18:29, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
If the observance is not notable enough for its own article, it shouldn't be listed here. If something is not supported, it is removed regardless of good faith. Have a look at WP:DAYS. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 18:33, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
60-70% of global deaths are caused by immune system failure (Cause_of_death), yet you have somehow decided that the Day of Immunology is not notable enough for its own article? Sad mouse (talk) 22:58, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
It does not matter what I think. No article exists on this subject. If no article exists on this subject, it cannot be notable enough to be included. The minimum criteria for inclusion is that the observance be the subject of an article. That is the only method we have to make sure that everyone's pet holiday is not cluttering up the lists. Doesn't it seem reasonable that we have some minimum standards for inclusion? I encourage you to write an article on the subject. If the article survives as notable, then the observance can be added here. Sounds fair to me and has nothing to do with my opinion of the observance. -- Mufka (u) (t)

[edit] Wendee Lee

Wendee Lee appears in the list of days of the year as born in April 29th 1955, but in the Wendee Lee article, her birthday appears as in February 20 (no year typed). ¿Should I edit the Wendee Lee article with the April 29th birthday? 190.24.64.58 (talk) 02:48, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

It works the other way around. The listing on the date page needs to match what is in the article. The article contains the referenced information. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 02:51, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Just a moment I remembered to check what the external links shown in the article about her mentioned about her birthdate, and according to the sites IMDB, Voice Chasers and Anime News Network (the 4th link shows an interview), it's April 29 1955, it would indicate the Wendee Lee article is the one with the wrong birthdate. 190.24.64.58 (talk) 04:57, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

You are correct. I have fixed it. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 05:17, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] 1707 – Scotland and England unified in United Kingdom of Great Britain

According to the articles, linked, the Union actually took place on 1 May, not today.

[edit] Barbaro

I don't think animals should be included on birthday or death lists. These should be reserved for humans only.

Are there any guidelines as to whether or not animals can be included on Day articles? Jim Michael (talk) 21:10, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Newcomer to editing. I too was surprised to find an animal listed on a birthday list. However, a friend looking up her birthday and finding Barbaro listed on April 29 found it to be an encouragement. It seems to be a question of the philosophy and reasoning behind Day articles. Are the articles purely meant for reference? It can be enlightening to compare what historical events occurred in other parts of the world on a specific date, but usually in history lessons more general comparisons are used, and specific date lists do not readily lend themselves to generalities. Most day-to-day users as myself would probably look up a specific day only because it had personal meaning. Since this is so, and since some general readers might be embarrassed or insulted to find an animal listed along with the human individuals, it might be worth considering keeping birth dates of significant animals to the events section on each date page, and only to be added if there is such a significant animal to list. Barbaro is such an animal since the many attempts in equine surgery and physical rehabilitation were considerable, and significant in the understanding of modern veterinary medicine. Johnnyrev (talk) 23:03, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

The guideline at WP:DOY does not directly address the inclusion of animals, although the topic has been discussed. The addition of animals has been generally tolerated for those that are the subject of an article. They appear very rarely and there hasn't been a need to address them directly. I would support their exclusion, but I wouldn't support special treatment if they are allowed to be included. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c)
Most of the animals listed on these pages are horses. Whirlaway, Kelso, Phar Lap, Barbaro, Affirmed, Ruffian, Kauto Star, Alydar, Man o' War, Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Aristides, and Narita Bryan all appear in the births and/or deaths sections of these pages. There are also some dogs, Rin Tin Tin, Greyfriars Bobby, Moose, and Soccer. Also a sheep: Dolly, gorillas: Massa, Floquet de Neu, and Koko, whales: Shamu and Keiko, an elephant: Jumbo, a panda: Ling-Ling, and chimpanzees: Ham the Chimp and Washoe. I can't think of any other kind of animal at the moment. I think I may have removed a couple horse entries from these pages a few months ago, but generally I leave them be. They don't do any harm, but I don't think they belong on these pages and I wouldn't at all mind seeing them go. [edit] Edit request from Martink11, 23 November 2010

{{edit semi-protected}}

Do you reference up-coming events, for example announced wedding date of Prince Willam and Kate Middleton on this date in 2011?

Not done: Nope, future events are explicitly prohibited. See the guidelines. Winston365 (talk) 23:14, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

Please remove this. I'm pretty confident it is fiction. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hugorifkind (talkcontribs) 12:52, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

YesY Done Thanks. Winston365 (talk) 23:40, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
Even if it were true, it would be far too trivial to include. The Events sections of Day articles are for world events. Jim Michael (talk) 01:57, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
As a bit of trivia, this "fact" was deliberately inserted into this article as a joke by Times journalist Hugo Rifkind on the day that Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding was announced for April 29th 2011, as test of whether British Tabloid newspapers would report their facts blindly from wikipedia without doing any real fact checking. The Mirror and the Daily Telegraph both did. Source: Private Eye no 1277 The nell 87 (talk) 22:39, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Edit Events Section

Can't we add the Royal Wedding? (in UK 2011!)

This will presumably be placed in the In The News section instead. Anthem of joy (talk) 19:51, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Royal Wedding?

Today is the Royal Wedding, wich seems to be very important for a lot of people. Maybe someone should add it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rik van Doorn (talkcontribs) 09:43, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
