[edit] How many families of New World monkeys?
This article refers to "the four families of New World monkeys", but New World monkeys says "New World monkeys are the five families of primates". Are there four or five? 68.83.240.41 (talk) 01:02, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
- Depends on who you ask. There have historically been lots of different classification of platyrrhines. The main current disagreement (the probable cause of the discrepancy you noted) is whether the Callitrichidae and Cebidae should be included in a single family or not. [edit] Which is largest?
The article directly contradicts itself. In the first paragraph we have
...and woolly spider monkeys (the latter being the largest of the New World monkeys)
and in the second paragraph
... with the howler monkeys being the largest ...
My reading of Guatemalan black howler and woolly spider monkey indicates that the second paragraph is correct.
