Talk:Atlantic hurricane records

These "records" overlap heavily with those at List of notable tropical cyclones. Either those records should *all* be split off into this list (which should be renamed List of notable Atlantic hurricanes) or this list should be merged in there. And yes, I agree all lists of records should be turned into templates that can be included on hurricane article pages (like {{Most intense hurricanes}}. Jdorje 22:30, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

I was unaware of that page, as the 2005 season page didn't link to it. I think the idea of a seperate page is better, as the North Atlantic section takes up considerable amount of the list on the List of notable tropical cyclones. I believe I did a search for "hurricane records" and didn't come up with anything, that is why I created this page initially. --Mcmillen76 23:17, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

Lack of sources

At least one "record" here is flat-out wrong. I suspect many others are. Any record that you cannot provide a source for should be removed. Jdorje 01:37, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

All of these appeared as "records" on the 2005 hurricane season. If I knew which one was inaccurate, I will check it. I may have typed the wrong name. --Mcmillen76 02:22, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

That's not the way it works. All of the records need to be confirmed. If it cannot be confirmed, it is not a record. I'm not blaming you specifically here; throughout all the current season's articles people have taken every opportunity to insert any sort of "record" they can find (most of them probably are records but are useless since accurate data only goes back about 10 years, but that's another issue). But in many cases people just take offhand remarks by weather forecasters and then claim on wikipedia that they are records. But that's not the way records work -- they need sources. Okay, I do admit I did not confirm all of them. I have been meaning to take the HURDAT file I downloaded from the NHC and write a program to parse it and get statistics from it, but I have not finished it. The page should be left as disputed, until I, or someone else can provide notations for each record.

The question that comes up now is, how do you document a record that has been researched, but does not appear on any other webpage, book, or source as a record? For example, maybe a silly record like "the only hurricane ever in the 3rd week of June"(don't know if it really exists)? You would have to go over all the records, and confirm it yourself. Is this considered original research, if the data it was created from is available? Whenever I get that program done, it'll be posted as open source so that others can use it.
