[edit] IPA pronunciation?

I lived the first 18 years of my life in Bayou La Batre, and I don't recall ever hearing "Bayou" pronounced [ˈbe.ju]. More like [ˈbaɪ.oʊ lə ˈbætʃ.ɹi] or [ˈbaɪ.u lə ˈbætʃ.ɹi]. (See pronunciations given in bayou article). In fact it sometimes sounds more like [ˈbaɪ.lə ˈbætʃ.ɹi] or [ˈba.lə ˈbætʃ.ɹi]. Unless somebody can defend the pronunciation current in the article, I'm planning on changing it. --Jeff robertson 00:49, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Is the last syllable really chree, or is it just the sound of tree? kwami (talk) 21:31, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
At least in my speech, "tree" has a discernible "ch" sound in it. I can make myself say [tr], but the tendency to say [tʃr] is so strong that I would always do it in normal speech. --Jeff robertson (talk) 13:27, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
Okay, as long as that's automatic, and doesn't contrast with tree, we don't need to transcribe it. kwami (talk) 19:36, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

Agree with the proposed change in pronunciation (assuming I understand the symbols correctly). Locals speaking to locals call the place By-la-ba-tree, ("y" as a long "I" sound, "a" as short "a" sound, light touch on the "t") all slurred together without a breath.(Doctorfun (talk) 17:07, 10 February 2010 (UTC))
