[edit] Categorisation
I'm confused as to why this article is categorised by platform as it's a fairly minor consideration, all told.
If a more appropriate differentiator can't be found, all items should end up in a single table. The table(s) should list features as well as technical information. Does it have blogs, wiki, comments, rss, workflow, multiple users, plugins, skinning, etc.
Currently all the mature CMS software is lost amongst the masses of startups, and this page provides little to no benefit to anybody. Phwoar (talk) 04:05, 28 May 2010 (UTC)
can you my CMS ?
I also think the implementation language classification is not a good primary index of the great variety of CMS's. There are different purposes, different storage ideas, different end uses, and more. One idea is to have multiple pages to allow different classifications to organize the tables. A simple idea is to allow sort by each column. An easy 1st step. Other more subjective organizing criteria might justify separate pages. Johnswolter (talk) 20:16, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

[edit] A Solution to many of these problems
Why don't we simply branch off all of these sections in their own articles? We could have a "Comparison of PHP CMS Software" and a "Comparison of .NET CMS Software". This would allow the inclusion of an increased number of software to be listed, as well as a more detailed analysis of them all. Right now, there are simply too to many items, with too little information to really be of any use to anyone.
Additionally, while weblog software is "CMS" software, it is in a completely different scope than Software like Joomla! or Drupal, and so I propose and "Comparison of Weblog Software" be branched off of this as well since a person looking to start a blog isn't interesting in creating a full website in the scope of Joomla! and vice versa. This would also cut down on the clutter and make comparisons easier. I know this would require a fair amount of work, but removing items to simplify this page is only going to disagreement. Bragr (talk) 00:04, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
- Additionally we all ready have a Weblog Software page so those items being listed here are redundant. They should be removed and a comparison done there. I would like to go forward with this, but I would like the concurrence of other members involved in this page. Bragr 17:37, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
-
- It would be nice to have specific different categories like Weblog and CMS and PHP and .NET CMS but would also like that there is back-links to each other. Then it makes sense as well.Shirishag75 (talk) 17:03, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
- Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a site to list out every cms there is. If you want that go to [CMS Matrix]. This page and all pages are for noteworthy items only and this will never change. So, no I don't agree with your proposition. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.208.43.89 (talk) 20:33, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
- I vote to have the page removed completely. The page is a never ending battle of what is noteworthy and will never end. This page really serves no purpose other than to provide free advertising for companies. Just make the page links off to sites like cmsmatrix and that would end this insanity for good. cmsguy123 —Preceding undated comment added 15:59, 20 February 2010 (UTC).
- The battle about what's noteworthy doesn't only take place on this page. The criteria for noteworthiness are quite clear, and it doesn't make sense to remove this page because it's a "never-ending battle". Many other valuable pages are also battlegrounds, and this page, as a list of notable CMS', is valuable to readers. Greenman (talk) 20:02, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
- The criteria for noteworthiness is not clear, otherwise we would not have to lock the page to keep people from adding non-noteworthy products every day. I think that if we implement a simply policy it would solve most of the problems.
- Wikipedia:Notability clearly lists the criteria for article notability. Once a CMS has its own article, it can appear on this list - WP:WTAF. The page gets locked because people ignore the criteria. The policy is simple and clear. Trying to create separate criteria, as per cmsguy123's comment below, is not simple or clear. Greenman (talk) 19:20, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
"No product can be added to this page unless it has no less than 3 external third party articles written about "the product" (not the company) by other websites/magazines/books/television that are well known, reputable and preferably noteworthy enough to be in wikipedia. Blog articles do not count. Press releases do not count. Product announcements do not count. Company mergers, purchases, and or acquisition announcements do not count." cmsguy123 —Preceding undated comment added 18:40, 28 February 2010 (UTC).

[edit] Missing Column?
There is a lot of info here about how these systems are implemented and licensed but not WHAT THEY ARE FOR!
The term "Content Management System" can mean many things and such systems can be used in many ways.
For more on this please see the Content Management Systems article, particularly the list under:
"Content management systems take the following forms:"
It would be helpful to add a column to the tables in this article that provides some indication of the main intended use(s) or audience(s) of each system. Perhaps the tags included in this column could be derived from the aforementioned list in the aforementioned article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.248.248.11 (talk) 15:05, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Flat-File CMS "pivot"
The link is not correct, as it redirects to a disambiguation page which doesn't contain any reference to "pivot" (as a CMS, I mean). However, their website is: http://www.pivotlog.net/, if this may help you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.203.155.31 (talk) 05:19, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
[edit] "Others" which should be in "PHP"
Some of the items in "Others" (3.6) are written in PHP, but appear to have been separated due to their use of Smarty (XOOPS, Serendipity, Zikula) or XSLT (Xaraya). I'd like to suggest that these should be moved into the "PHP" (3.3) table as there's no reason to separate them: they're PHP. I noticed that Xaraya is already in the main table... 1.1.5, while the one in Others is 1.1.3, 10 months older, but it mentions SQLite and SQL Server support which the other doesn't. They need merging (by someone who can check up on it). Also, Django isn't a CMS in itself - though there are packages for it to make it a CMS. It should be removed from here (and possibly some such packages added). Chris Morgan (talk) 05:16, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Non-notable entries
As is the convention in lists such as these (Wikipedia:LIST), only entries with an associated article should be listed. To add an entry here, an article should first be created. I will start to remove the entries without an article shortly, after giving some time for people to start on entries they may have been planning. Greenman (talk) 14:40, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Open Source First
The open source entries should be listed before the proprietary stuff. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.23.166.141 (talk) 01:52, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
- Any reason? :) Greenman (talk) 11:45, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
- Of course: The badge on the page says "Free software portal" and then starts out to list commercial, decidedly non-free stuff first. Frankly, this is bordering fraud. Imho, there should be a different page for commercial CMS, where all the commercial listings be moved to instead, maybe with a link to that page (like "For commercial offerings, go to this page"). I also think that all packages should include a mandatory license field, with only OSI-approved licenses, or a subset thereof, being allowed. I have nothing against listing commercial CMS offerings in Wikipedia, but pretty please not on a page that claims to talk about "free software". 193.221.127.48 (talk) 08:43, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
- But why would an article named "List of content management systems" be considered part of the free software portal? I could see it if the article was named "List of free content management systems", which it isn't. The name as given has nothing to do with free (as in speech) or not. If there is any reason for a "free software portal" link at all (which I doubt), the proper place would be at the bottom of the page somewhere. In any case, this page is not primarily about free software. It is about content management systems. 68.231.118.191 (talk) 07:54, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Suggests: consolidate lists; compare features and details, not just details
Why are there a bunch of lists here. It's difficult to compare CMS the way this article is structured because they are separate lists. I would suggest the sections in this article become a column on a single unified table. If the user wants to see them organized in this way, the user can sort them this way, but is not forced to view them organized in this way.
Also, this comparison is less helpful because it really doesn't compare anything. There's no feature lists to compare. The lists here are really comparing details about each software that most users may not care about, or are less important. I came to this article because I was looking too see what CMS support integration with MediaWiki, have integrated wiki software, and various other features I find important. While the license the CMS is released under and the base language the software was written in are factors in my decision making process, ultimately, the way this article is structured is not at all helpful for the information I was looking for. Servel333 (talk) 20:12, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
- I strongly agree, it just needs somebody with the energy to untangle the current structure and re-order it. Greenman (talk) 20:43, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
- This article used to be called Comparisons of content management systems, but the title was changed for the very concerns you bring up. It is not intended to be shopping guide for or comprehensive comparison of CMS software, but a relatively simple list of Wikipedia articles on the topic. — Satori Son 13:22, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
[edit] suggest a cms

Under ASP.NET Sitecore CMS should be listed. It was removed for some reason with a notation that Sitecore is a company and not a CMS. Sitecore is a company but their CMS is called "Sitecore CMS". http://www.sitecore.net/en/Products/Sitecore-CMS.aspx It seems like competitors are possibly deleting each other's platforms? 17:12, 18 May 2010 (UTC)labarista —Preceding unsigned comment added by Labarista (talk • contribs)

{{editsemiprotected}} Radiant CMS updated - version: Refraction 0.9.1 released: (June 27, 2010)
Partly done: Radiant CMS was updated per the request. However, this page is for notable CMSs only. As a general guide for notability for this page, they should have their own article first. If you have any further questions/comments please reply here and place a {{talkback}} tag on my talk page. Thanks, Stickee (talk) 22:13, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
hm i cannot find it under the open source flat file cms...??

ok means someone else have first to write an article about it? because if i write an article about it i think it would be considered as self proclamation :-) so i come back here if someone wrote something about it..!?
thanks anyway —Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.25.216.98 (talk) 17:14, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
- Hey Fabian. You are welcome to create an article about Feindura, however, just make sure there is no conflict of interest and it is written from a neutral point of view. Though, I am more concerned about the notability of Feindura. For a CMS to be notable it should usually have been the subject of multiple non-trivial published works whose source is independent of the site itself. (eg newspaper, online magazine article). I was unable to find any information about Feindura other than its website itself. Thanks, Stickee (talk) 01:16, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

With z-admin Small Business CMS you will get all the tools needed to create beautiful website. With support from Themes, easily change your web site look. Need specific business logic functionality? No problem, z-admin CMS support modules and custom SQL bound items. Easy to use and free!
Easy to use You don't need any tutorials for this application. If you know how to use Microsoft Word or similar Word processing application, you will know how to write Articles and News, and create Pages. Let's keep things simple!
Module based Depending on selected theme, you can add modules and custom modules to dedicated areas on web site. You can add module inside Article. You can easily change any part of web site; don't like Main Menu on top ? No problem, delete it and insert module into area you wish.
Themes Completely change your website look, from simple page background to position of modules. Every kind of HTML can be easily converted to dynamic template. No programming skills needed. Convert existing static HTML website to z-admin dynamic website!
Roles / Logins Add unlimited number of Roles, and unlimited number of Users. Users can login to z-admin and write Articles, Polls, etc. With Roles you allow/disallow specific modules to user (e.g. allow user to write Articles, but disallow him to change modules on a website).

Twitter & Youtube Two of most popular web services are embedded inside z-admin. Create unlimited number of Twitter Widgets and YouTube video galleries.
Custom Items Completely redefine presentation of any Items in z-admin! Handle how Articles, News, Columns, Menus or any other Items are shown. Also, create custom SQL Table and use this module to display data! Define templates for Header, Footer, Item and Alternating Item and Separator. Write CSharp code along with SQL.
Dynamic Text Add Dynamic text formatted on Server! Use C# language to format text and display it on screen. Possible uses are: read Time/Date, get value from Database, read URL, get user Regional settings, etc. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zoran123456 (talk • contribs) 07:11, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Orchard
The most recent build of Orchard apparently doesn't support MySql (in fact only SQL Server and SQL Sever CE is supported). — Preceding unsigned comment added by PlaySharp (talk • contribs) 14:10, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Pines CMS
So I recently added Pines CMS to the list and it was removed because it doesn't have its own article. My question is, considering it's a very new CMS (first stable release Nov 12), is it notable enough to justify its own article? It's been around for about 3 years, but only with dev releases. It's certainly a bigger project (codebase wise) than most other CMSs on the list, but isn't as widely used. Some of its subprojects, like Pines Notify, are actually notable and fairly widely used, but not the CMS itself. And it does have quite a few development features that no other PHP CMS has. For example, a package manager and format written in all PHP. Anyway, I didn't want to create the article unless it was actually notable enough. Guywithcable (talk) 17:16, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
- Guywithcable, please review the WP:N guideline. I hope it will help you to decide if the article about Pines CMS worth spending time on its writing. --ElComandanteChe (talk) 19:36, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
