The first English language novel? What about the works of Aphra Behn, in particular Love Letters Between a Nobleman and His Sisters and Oronooko? -- Zoe

Indeed. I replaced the Robinson Crusoe claim with a link to First novel in English where that controversial question is discussed. There probably ought to be some discussion of the issue on this page, though.
The rest of the page needs some work. Richardson, Fielding, Smollett and Sterne all deserve a mention. Jane Austen is not a Victorian. Thackeray? The "authorial voice" style was characteristic of earlier novelists like Fielding but became less popular during the Victorian period. Is it really the case that most novels were published in serial form? Gdr 21:04, 2004 Apr 7 (UTC)
