Quote: " . . . Plante gave Blake an ultimatum, refusing to go back out onto the ice without the mask, to which Blake obliged not wanting to forfeit the game since the Canadiens did not have a back-up goaltender."

There would not have been a forfeit. Had Plante not returned, the Canadiens would have been forced to use one of their other players in goal, or else use the "house goalie" provided by the home team. That was the standard practice throughout the 1950s. This would have been Joe Schafer who was a trainer in the Rangers organization, and actually did see action in a few NHL games in similar circumstances. WHPratt (talk) 18:47, 4 June 2009 (UTC) That's "Schaefer." His New York Times obituary was published on January 24, 2001, and it stated that he worked for an office equipment company, but was also a part-time Ranger employee as a statistician, penalty timekeeper, goal judge and practice goalie. On a couple of occasions in 1960 and 1961, Gump Worsley got injured and Schaefer tended the Ranger goal, losing both times, but not too badly.WHPratt (talk) 17:42, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

"House Goalie" (or "Emergency Goalkeeper," as the rulebook used to have it) could be a fascinating article to research. I'd guess that it is unparalled in team sports. One position on the team is singled out as entirely too specialized for just any teammate to staff . . . so we draft a civilian, who may even have loyalties to the wrong team. (Did someone decide that the paying spectators deserved to see a "real" goalkeeper in the nets, wherever he came from?) Can you imagine a major league baseball team with an injured catcher refusing to let its utility infielder assume the role, but instead using a retired minor league catcher who happens to be under contract to the opposing team? Or a pro football team borrowing a kicker for the fourth quarter? Ridiculous! WHPratt (talk) 16:52, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

Fans of goaltender trivia should check the talk page on Jerry Toppazzini, for my notes on his short stint as a goalie and identification of another house goalie, Wally “Gunzo” Humeniuk. WHPratt (talk) 19:24, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Can someone add the mage and non-mage styles of current masks? 70.29.208.247 (talk) 06:36, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
