Hey this answer might be a little late for you but since you asked - as a non-Muslim you probably wouldn't be able to get to the Cave of Hira. The Saudi government is extremely strict about visas and actually does monitor visitors to the country. As Wahhabis they also aren't very big on pilgrimages to historic sites and actually have demolished a number of archaeological sites.
Which brings up another point... I've heard that the Wahhabis wanted to demolish the Cave of Hira just as they did the Prophet Muhammad's house and tomb, Fatima al-Zahra's grave, the battlefields of Uhud and Badr, etc. Anyone got details on that? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.14.224.20 (talk) 13:46, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
To add to the previous poster's comments, the reasoning behind the demolishing or cordoning off of religious sites is that many visitors would venerate sites and icons and give them various attributes. So instead of visiting a site simply because of historical purposes it turns into a pilgrimage. [edit] Improvements to article
I've tried to improve the article slightly, by improving the -first revelation' section and by giving a few links (albeit to Islamic websites - can try to find more neutral versions later). The article still needs to be worded better and needs more information. Maybe more on the background of Mecca and it's people (and their beliefs) - I just wrote a minimal amount of this at the start, but I think it can be made more robust. May I humbly remind you that this article is about a geographical location? Everything else must be only a summary. Detailed descriptions of revelations must be covered in articles of proper name, such as Laylat al-Qadr. Please also keep in mind that the text must match other places in wikipeidia, such as section "The first revelations" in "Muhammad" article and in articles about suras.
