Hi! Don't know how to edit here, but maybe someone can add to the Jasper Johns bio that he provided a voice as himself on The Simpsons. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.237.141.44 (talk) 03:20, 22 April 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Numbers by Jasper Johns by David Shankbone.jpg

Nuvola apps important.svg

Image:Numbers by Jasper Johns by David Shankbone.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

[edit] Re. "Flag" (1954-55): Removed reference to "the first of his mature pieces"

I've removed a reference to "Flag" which stated "This was the first of his mature pieces" because I think it's highly ambiguous. It's certainly true that Johns destroyed as much of his pre-"Flag" work that he could lay his hands on prior to or soon after he started work on "Flag". It's been argued (by Fred Orton persuasively, but by others too) that this was intended to signal that "Flag" was a 'beginning' (or probably more accurately, as a 'new beginning') so we should effectively see "Flag" as Johns' 'first' work of any kind. In this context, I'm not sure how we're supposed to see this as his first "mature" work (in fact, I'm not entirely sure how we define what is or isn't "mature" in any context - I suspect it's entirely subjective). Anyway, unless someone has a different view on this I think we should keep this reference out. Any thoughts? Kevin Boyd (talk) 22:57, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Jasper Johns: dead or alive?

Jasper Johns at the moment is alive and at the age of 78. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.29.82.254 (talk) 16:02, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] References which support that anti-art be mentioned in the article

  • Tilman Osterwold. “Pop art”. Taschen, 2003, p. 44. “‘I want to be a machine,’ says Andy Warhol, the founder of an art ‘Factory’ in New York, where pictures were reproduced using photographic clippings as models. Even confirmed painters like Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein and Jasper Johns spoke of the ‘depersonalization’ and ‘anonymity’ of their work.” P. 55. : “Pop artists saw their work as anti-art, at least in relation to traditional notions of art. They expressed this in their depersonalization of style, their anti-subjectivism, in the roles they assumed in mass society and in their redefinition of art itself.” Armando Navarro (talk) 00:04, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
  • Thomas R. H. Havens. “Radicals and realists in the Japanese nonverbal arts: the avant-garde rejection of modernism”. University of Hawaii Press, 2006, p. 137 : “As pioneered by Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, the anti-art of Neo-Dada and of pop art was the next step beyond abstract expressionism and informel, Miyakawa contended.”

[edit] symbol

could someone please give an example to me of a symbol that is not indexical. If no one can, could whomever (and I'm sure you're reading this) please remove that bland wrongness contrasting "conventional symbols" with an "indexical" approach. And buy a dictionary. This is an encyclopedia, not an art critical essay where such misuse of language might be accepted. When the misuse is accepted by everyone else you can use it. It might happen. 86.26.173.195 (talk) 02:32, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] "Classical"?

articles says he gets lumped with Pop Artists because he uses 'classical' iconography.

Could someone improve on that? 'Classical' could mean ancient greco-roman imagery or any number of other things -- whatever it is, it doesn't seem to have much to do with Johns. Perhaps 'banal' is the word we're looking for? Or is this all too interpretive for a Wikipedia entry? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Supineny (talkcontribs) 02:31, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

[edit] File:Jasper Johns, Flag (detail).jpg Nominated for speedy Deletion

Image-x-generic.svg

An image used in this article, File:Jasper Johns, Flag (detail).jpg, has been nominated for speedy deletion for the following reason: Wikipedia files with no non-free use rationale as of 3 December 2011

What should I do?

Don't panic; you should have time to contest the deletion (although please review deletion guidelines before doing so). The best way to contest this form of deletion is by posting on the image talk page.

  • If the image is non-free then you may need to provide a fair use rationale
  • If the image isn't freely licensed and there is no fair use rationale, then it cannot be uploaded or used.
  • If the image has already been deleted you may want to try Deletion Review
