Valiya Kappithan in malayalam (the language of Kerala) does not indicate commander in chief. the name for commander in chief is pada thalavan or senanayakan, and these ranks were not used in the travancore army, on a standing basis.
valiya in malayalam means large or big or in this case senior kappithan means captain of a ship or in this case admiral.
