can someone verify "Sultan" as a famous ape? and if so, what kind was he?

Bonobos

Bonobos are a kind of chimpanzee, so I propose we move bonobos to the chimp page.--Mishac 08:40, 20 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Bonobos are a separate species from chimpanzee - so probably better to leave them in two places. Flit 15:14, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Article title and merges

Just a factual note, the sentence: "Of course, this does not include humans, as they are not apes by definition." is not correct. Humans, chimpanzees, orangutans and gorillas are all members of the biological family Hominidae. What about Gibbons and Siamangs?

This is a relevant point. Currently this list so called ape only appears to include great apes not lesser apes. If it is intended to only include great apes then it should be renamed. If it is intended to include both, then it should be expand or at least the opening paragraph should be re-worked to mention it includes lessers apes. Nil Einne 21:05, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Passion and her daughter

Jane Goodall reported in a National Geographic documentary that there were these 2 canaballistic chimpanzees; who killed baby chimps and ate them (shared the meat between Passion and her own daughter). She may have killed more than 10 baby chimps. This shows canabalism; so maybe these two chimps should be listed here? They seem to be pretty popular in this regard. There was another chimp, I believe it was the daughter or sister of Melissa the chimp, who tried to beg the humans for help while they were observing Passion & her daughter try and kill Melissa's newborn baby (while Melissa was attempting to defend it). 165.196.139.24 16:33, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Baboons

As far as I can tell from wikipedia, baboons are not considered apes even tho the word ape may have originally refered to baboons. As such I removed this line:

Fabian?

I removed the following (sorry I somehow got confused with baboons when I originally removed it):

As it looks like vandalism to me. I'm highly doubt that a true bonobo 3D renderer exists and suspect it's someone's idea of a 'joke' on someone named Fabian who is a 3D renderer but not a bonobo. A quick Google also doesn't find anything. 21:38, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Micaco Tiao

I changed the text. While I don't know the subject at all, I highly doubt he had a habit of throwing excrement at politicians. Most likely, he had a habit of throwing excrement at visitos, which occasionally included politicians and when it did it got in to the news. Perhaps he was particularly annoyed by large parties or cameras or something so politician tended to get a lot of it, but this would be because of the fact they're in a large party or have cameras following them, not because they're politicians. BTW, I assume he's dead from the past tense that was used? Nil Einne 19:01, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

Humans and apes

An anon user [3] removed the bit about not including humans. I've re-added it. I also added the non-human part to the first line. Perhaps if we say non-human apes we don't really need to clarify but IMHO it's better if we do both. However I will not object if you remove the explaination but not the non-human (or vice versa). And if you don't think humans are apes try reading the article Nil Einne 19:28, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

Finster

I moved Finster to the monkey list. Based on the fact that Finster appeared in the movie Monkey Trouble and also appeared as a monkey in another movie, I'm assuming Finster is a monkey but of course, it wouldn't be surprising if Finster was in fact a ape of some sort (probably a chimp). Lancelot Link

Anyone know the names of the chimpanzee actors in the children's TV show Lancelot Link? Only two (Tongo and Debbie) are mentioned in that article. — Loadmaster 17:07, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Orangutang starred 80's show

I remember a show back in the 80's that featured an orangutang as the main character, but I can't remember the name. The orangutang was a female, I think, and the character has almost super-strength. Travis

What about Travis (chimpanzee)? I just put him under "Pet Apes", but could he have been in "ape actors", as he had had a somewhat impressive resume of roles and co-stars before he became world famous, not for being a famous person's pet like the rest of that catagory, but for that horrible mauling of a family friend in Connecticut last year.

sort order

Currently the sections are sorted just by name of the ape. Should we divide each section for gorillas, chimps, etc? Then within each type of ape, we can sort by name.

List of Apes, Revisited

I see what you mean. The word "notable" seems useless. For example, "List of Iowans" or some such, it's assumed that they are going to be "notable" or "famous." No one is going to think it's a list of all the Iowans who ever lived. You don't need to call it "List of Notable Iowans".

However, I just don't think that "List of Apes" is the answer. It's just too vauge. You see, "Chimp, Gorilla, Bonobo, Orangutan" is also a list of apes. So is "King Kong, Clyde, Dr. Zeus". The tile of an article should not be ambiguous like this. It should say very specifically what this article is a list of. "List of Apes" could be any number of things. Is there no compromise title?

There seems to be a movement to name such articles "Individual ____" instead of "List of ________". For example, List of cats is now List of individual cats. Chrisrus (talk) 01:44, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Famous western lowland gorillas in captivity

I've removed the following section (Famous western lowland gorillas in captivity) from western lowland gorilla as it doesn't fit there.

• Babec – On exhibit at the Birmingham Zoo in Birmingham, Alabama (USA) and was the first gorilla to receive an artificial pacemaker.
• Beta – First ever gorilla to undergo hip replacement (three times: 1995, 2005, 2007). Lived at Brookfield Zoo with guenons. Died 2008.
• Binti Jua – Saved a three-year-old boy that fell into her habitat in 1996 at Brookfield Zoo.
• Charles – A silverback and resident of the Toronto Zoo since 1974. Known for his painting abilities.
• Colo – First gorilla to be born in captivity anywhere in the world and currently the oldest gorilla in captivity in the world. She was born at the Columbus Zoo to Millie Christina (mother) and Baron Macombo (father) on December 22, 1956.
• Goma – First gorilla born in a European zoo. Celebrated her 50th birthday on September 23, 2009 at Zoo Basel.
• Guy the Gorilla – Large Western Lowland Gorilla that belonged to the London Zoo.
• Jambo – World-famous gorilla born at Zoo Basel and then transferred to the Jersey Zoo. On August 31, 1986, the five year old Levan Merritt fell into the gorilla enclosure and lost consciousness. Jambo stood guard over the boy when he was unconscious. Jersey Zoo has erected a bronze statue of Jambo. Both a book and a documentary were made.
• Koko – Female western lowland gorilla whose trainer taught to use sign language to communicate.
• Massa – This former resident of the Philadelphia Zoo set the longevity record of 54 years at the time of his death in 1984.
• Nico – The oldest male gorilla in Europe. Lives at Longleat Safari Park in his own house on an island in the middle of the lake, with satelite television. He has been constantly featured on BBC Animal Park, and is well known and loved by the safari parks visitors
• Snowflake – The only albino gorilla known to date. Lived at Barcelona Zoo. Euthanized 2003.
• Tam-tam – First zoo gorilla who grew up in its gorilla group. Born to Goma at Zoo Basel.
