Sorry, David, you are absolutely right about the in-text link "air raid shelter". All I can say is that I did quite a bit of linking on 16 Feb. and somehow got beyond myself. These shelters are not 12,000 feet (2.3 miles) long, they are more like 1,200-1,400 ft long. I think 12,000 ft has come from an incorrect transcription of part of the book "Rails through the clay" here. That number doesn't tally with what is given in the above document on that page (see http://www.subbrit.org.uk/rsg/features/deep_level_shelters/photo3.html) nor with the information on Google Books for the same book.
