Does anyone know how Twelve Mile, in Madison County, Missouri got it's name?

We just bought the Whitener house on 67 and JJ and would appreciate any stories, historical or personal that happened in that area or at the old house. We plan on redoing the house and will have a book containing information about the house and the surrounding area.
