A devasthaana is a Hindu temple.

That's a slight rewriting of the opening line of the article, only replacing mandir for an equivalent in my mother tongue. I've done this to make the point that we have a Hindi word being used here, in a context where there is a standard and accepted English usage. It's against policy to use such. So I propose that the article be renamed to 'Hindu temple'.

I would support a move. Mandir is not just Hindi - it's used in other languages too - but it's certainly not the only name (devalaya, devasthana, koil...), and as you point out, it's not in keeping with Wikipedia:Naming_conventions#Use_English_words. -- Arvind 17:33, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
