[edit] Incorporation?

Hi,

I authored the "Integral membrane protein" entry that got incorporated into this "membrane protein" entry. At least for the time being, I'm going to change the redirect and include a "see also Membrane protein"--which has a basic flaw. Transmembrane proteins _are_ integral membrane proteins and relatedly it is _not_ true that integral membrane proteins never span from inside to outside. The distinction is simply that integral membrane proteins _need not_ span it completely, because the category is defined in terms of "whatever gunk comes along with the lipids and not with the water soluble stuff" during protein purification. Besides the objection about the terminological distinctions being not quite right, I also think it distracts from the biology to make these distinctions the emphasis of the entry, which I think is a mistake.

168...whatever I am.

I confirm that integral membrane proteins are not always transmembrane proteins. the word "integral" means that the membrane structure must be break to extract the protein. In fact, there is numerous example of protein that are not transmembrane and require strong detergent to be extraxted, such as GPI anchored proteins or in-plane membrane anchored proteins. Additionally, membrane proteins are not always linked to a lipid, as explain in the article

I have made some changes, please tell me if you disagree with anything. Obviously, a lot of things remain to be done with regard to membrane-associated proteins. Biophys 20:23, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

We need an article about protein-lipid interactions in biological membranes.Biophys 04:43, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Suggested merger

I agree. Protein Function in Cell Membranes content can be incorporated into this article and then redirected here.Biophys (talk) 02:37, 9 December 2007 (UTC)

  • I also agree that the page should be merged. I'll perform the merge if there is no objection. --Several Times (talk) 16:50, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I agree too. --Jungjoonkim (talk) 14:24, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Well, I reused some of the content, with many necessary changes. There is not much useful there.Biophys (talk) 22:32, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

WOW! these images are beautiful!!!!Biophys, you are great Myrmeleon formicarius (talk) 15:19, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

Yeah seriously, awesome images man, Im gonna add one to the actual article if its ok, probably just one of the glycoprotiens .Mike of Wikiworld (talk) 19:24, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
