I was Barbara's closest friend in England and adapted several of her songs into English. She also based the character David in "Lily Passion" on me. I have added to her biography only what she would want me to add: as you know, Barbara was a very private person. No, M Khan, she did not commit suicide. She died of a toxic shock to her throat, though she had been ill for some time with respiratory problems. Her curious walk on stage was also the result of circulatory problems. "Il etait un piano" was posthumously published. It was not an autobiography, merely a collection of anecdotes she had written in diaries, etc, which was cobbled together after her death. Barbara would not have wanted this to be published. For the same reason I have always refused to write her story. When I published my biography of Freddie Mercury in 1991, it was Barbara who chose the title, "Living On The Edge". She died on the actual anniversary of his death. Three weeks earlier, on 21 October 1997, she had telephoned my wife and I to wish us good luck on our silver wedding anniversary. I still miss those three hour telephone calls she used to make in the middle of the night, when we would sing to each other. David Bret.

Already in place about Barbara (Monique Serf) is a thorough though brief biography. I wanted to add something about her incredible muscial talent and the loss her anonymity in the UK and USA represents.

I understood Barbara had committed suicide unable to come to terms with the decline of her voice but am not sufficiently sure of this to add it to her bio. - M. Khan

M.K. I believe your review of Barbara's style is quite accurate. However, I would like to point out that she didn't commit suicide: She died of a respiratory ailment which might have been caused by a form of Multiple Schlerosis.

If I type in Barbara into the search box of wikipedia all I get is information about Saint Barbara. Can someone set up a page that gives people the choice of whether they want to go to this page instead. I for one did not know Barbara's real name was Monique Serf.

I've just added certain information about her life: mainly that she ran away when she went to live in Belgium, and that her father had sexually abused her. I bought her autobiograph "Il etait un piano noir", and that is where I got the information. The biography is published by Librayre Artheme Fayard, 1998. ISBN is 2-253-14730-3

Let me support the two of you ; this title is simply irrelevant. Barbara has her entries in French dictionaries, under her only popular name, the name of a very popular singer and artist in France and non-English speaking Europe, which is... Barbara. Why no discography?
