[edit] Emperor of Korea, GCIE?

According to this website( http://www.4dw.net/royalark/Korea/korea8.htm ) the Emperor of Korea was made GCIE in 1900.

Why the British government decided to use this order? What, if any, was Kojong's connection with the Indian Empire? Mapple

Medals, etc, are still commonly given to foreign royalty and heads of state. The two Indian orders of chivalry created by the British had no Christian imagery or nomenclature: this probably made them more acceptable to Arab rulers and to the Emperor of Korea. [edit] Final awards?

Appointments to both Orders ceased after 14 August 1947.

It seems this may not be accurate - writing about Vernon Erskine-Crum, I noticed he was awarded the CIE on December 30th of that year (presumably the New Years Honours?); his obituary noted he was one of the last recipients, which suggest it may have ended in 1947 but not on the date of independence per se. Probably she was on some kind of shortlist, and then independence came, then was given the honour. Then perhaps the honours committee decided not to award it because of the India thing. Occam's Razor! 118.90.51.217 (talk) 02:27, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
