[edit] The Letter O Question

Phibsboro is one of seven areas of Dublin whose name ends with the letter O.
Naming all seven is a difficult and frequently asked question in pub quizzes.
Here's the full list ;

  • Phibsboro
  • Portobello
  • Marino
  • Rialto
  • Pimlico
  • Casino
  • Monto

I agree that with the correct spelling of Phibsboro ends with an 'o' Dublin City Coucil spelling of Phibsboro. The Letter O is not material for this section. It's triva and could be assign under a genreal Dublin triva article. ant_ie 23:37, 26 September 2005 (UTC)

Surely An Posts version of the spelling is more correct - Phibsborough. Thats the spelling on the street signs as well. the ending in O is just a corruption??

I would simply note in this article that there are two variants of the spelling. I agree with the previous editor that "The letter O" section is not relevant here. (Anyway, it's news to me that there's a Dublin neighbourhood called "Casino", but that's beside the point).Ecozeppelin 10:14, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Pap Vandalism

Some anonymous contributor continuously inserts material about "Pap Geraghty", apparently famous for a very heavily trafficked website. Yet Google produces only one reference [1], and the entire contents of that site are copied from the Wiki article. (Sarah777 23:35, 4 February 2007 (UTC))

The Pap Geraghty vandalism continues fro multiple IP addresses. This page needs to be watched. DSRH 16:39, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Phibsborough

I propose renaming to Phibsborough (retaining, of course, the information in the intro that the place is frequently written Phibsboro) since not only is this spelling used throughout the article but it appears to be the more frequently used official form. See for example the statutory instrument I.R. Uimh. 133/1975 — An tOrdú Logainmneacha (Foirmeacha Gaeilge) (Uimh. 1) (Postbhailte) 1975 which names the place as Phibsborough / Baile Phib. -- Picapica 11:16, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Agree. Always thought current spelling was not the right one to use. (Sarah777 23:54, 31 October 2007 (UTC))

I would appreciate any help in carrying out the renaming. (It isn't straightforward as Phibsborough already exists as a redirect, so a simple move won't work... and I almost always end up making a pig's ear of it in cases like this!) -- Picapica 22:18, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Sadly - I think I have the other pig's ear. User talk:BrownHairedGirl is deadly at this kind of thing (and everything else!) (Sarah777 23:42, 1 November 2007 (UTC))
Nope. I think I can do it (Sarah777 23:43, 1 November 2007 (UTC))
I was wrong...article lost it's talk page and history page and now exists under both names...definitely a case for BHG (Sarah777 23:56, 1 November 2007 (UTC))
There are two differ spellings for this aera, Phibsboro and Phibsborough.Dublin City Council use both in differ ways. The simplist thing is to direct Phibsborough to this article. ant_ie 09:52, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

That there are two spellings has already been acknowledged (it's a not uncommon phenomenon in Ireland: some places have three!), and is mentioned in the introduction to the article. The fact is, nevertheless, that no mention of the place in any other article in Wikipedia uses the Phibsboro spelling, so it seems perverse to have every Phibsborough reference point to an article entitled Phibsboro, especially since the article itself uses Phibsborough throughout.

When you say that DCC uses both "in differ[ent] ways", can you identify what these differences are? The choice looks haphazard to me: for instance, a planning application will say Phibsboro for no other apparent reason than that the person filing it just happened to spell it that way; the next one is just as likely to have the spelling Phibsborough (which IS the spelling used in legal texts). Notice, by the way, that the library branch mentioned above actually spells it Phibsboro' (with an apostrophe) on its website, tacitly acknowledging that this is a shortening of the official name -- Picapica 11:30, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

  • Page has been moved from Phibsboro to Phibsborough by filing an official administrator move request. The job is Oxo. — O'Dea (talk) 22:52, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Tagged for deletion

Any reason why this tag is still attached? RashersTierney (talk) 02:17, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Can some kind Admin please remove the AfD message on the article page. Thanks. RashersTierney (talk) 14:59, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] 'Development' section

This section has a single reference relating only to a local festival. Much of the language is also POV-laden and subjective. Will tag accordingly. Please feel free to discuss issues here with a view to improving. RashersTierney (talk) 07:20, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
