[edit] Healthy Measures Employee Insurance Plan

This whole section sounds ripped from the employee hand book complete with corporate spin. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.254.84.254 (talk) 12:33, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Meh

The reckoning link at the bottome of the page is kind of POVie. Meh. Skrew ball 07:25, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

There aren't that many good references on the internet - leave it for now? Coriolis (talk) 09:48, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

I'm slowly working on researching and improving this whole article. I now have all annual reports 1926-2007. Coriolis (talk) 09:48, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

--- The slogan that was used prior to the current one was "Giving our Best". I am unsure if it dates back to 1992, though.

[edit] Strike

I believe there was a major strike against the Safeway Corp. in 1978. I'll see if I can dig anything up on it.--Rockero 02:42, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

Safeway, like most major US grocery chains, has faced a large number of strikes over its history - which spans the formation of the labor movement in the US. It might not make sense to list them all. Coriolis (talk) 09:46, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Slogans

IIRC,"Nobody Does It Better (for Less)" actually lasted until the late 1990's...Ranma9617 00:00, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

This was what I originally thought too. Can anyone confirm this?

  • There was also in the late 1980's or early 1990's "The Best of Everything(in Just One Place)" Ranma9617 08:30, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
  • Additionally, I tagged parts of the section as needing verfication... Ranma9617 01:21, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

Two other slogan, probably for Canada: "We bring it all together." (late 1980s) "Today's Better Way." (early 1990s)--PsychoJason 23:40, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

  • I recall "Right down the street at Safeway" back in the '70s. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 170.121.14.11 (talk) 18:09, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Brands

Cragmont (soda) is the former brand that sticks in my mind more than Townhouse, Empress, or Scotch Buy. Could it be added in the future? 76.191.199.85 (talk) 22:32, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Added Open Nature under brands [[1]] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.245.27.141 (talk) 22:00, 18 March 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Technology

Should there be a mention of the year when Safeway began offering online groceries shopping and van deliveries? Club cards too, perhaps?

Safeway also owns Blackhawk Corp. One of the largest distributors of 3rd party gift cards in North America.

[edit] Second largest?

It says Safeway is the second largest in North America.... Then who is first? --Sofeil 12:55, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Kroger. Clipper471 14:27, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

I believe supervalu Inc. is the second largest and Safeway is third largest--Micheal21 01:23, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

Wal-Mart is the first, no? Dmarquard (talk) 06:47, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Trivia Section

The trivia section in this article bothers me for a few reasons One it is stated that trivia should be avoided in the guidelinesWP:TRIV Two this is a practice done is more than just Washington DC and for more than just safeway so the uniqueness implied is not correct. Three if we want an article section like this it should be retitles to reflect it as something other than trivia and to include examples from more than just Washington DC based on the same fact we aren't supposed to write or title articles from just one country's perspective. [edit] Safeway in Saudi

I lived in Saudi up until 1993, and the Safeway in al-Khobar was definately there up until then. Anyone know what happened to it and the other stores since then? --Zilog Jones 14:47, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

This article was automatically assessed because at least one WikiProject had rated the article as start, and the rating on other projects was brought up to start class. BetacommandBot 14:09, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Suitability of the "Environmental issues" section?

Not that I would want to dismiss the problem of plastic bags, but I wonder how the contents of that section relates to Safeway in particular. It sounded a newspaper report on a Annapolis hearing that relate to no retailer in particular and Safeway should not be singled out-- it is been clear that Safeway is neither instrumental or the worst offender in plastic bag pollution; it is, after all, not any bigger than Kroger or SuperValu or Wal-Mart. --Samuel di Curtisi di Salvadori 08:55, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

I was about to say the same thing. Coriolis (talk) 07:41, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

I removed the whole section. Why? (1) Unclear why this is a Safeway specific issue - wouldn't it make more sense under "plastic bags". (2) Some clear bias in the text. (talk) 03 November 2008

[edit] International

No mention I could see of the many UK stores. Did they sell these off? Een so they should be mentioned. Johnbod (talk) 13:49, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Just did a search of wiki but added UK and I got this. Looks like the company is no longer. --CubBC (talk) 10:18, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
Ah, thanks - I see now both acquisition & disposal of the UK business are mentioned in the article. Johnbod (talk) 13:16, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] nicknames

The nickname section is very funny! Not very encyclopedic with only references for the latter sentences.

It's so funny that it almost deserves a keep. Seriously, it's got to go or citations need to be found. Presumptive (talk) 03:35, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

The nicknames are hilarious! Where might one find a resource for this? Dmarquard (talk) 06:46, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Franchise

Thank you for your time and energy! Does anyone know of the best way to go about opening a Safeway Franchise? I am new to this and so any advice is welcome. :D I live in Burbank Washington. The county is Walla Walla County. The town is unincorporated and so I think I have to go through the county for everything. HERE (16 acre green farm field, between HW 124 and I 12) is where my intent is. I have already began contacting Walla Walla County and Safeway. I also contacted the local college in hopes that I can find some studies and such that already have been done. What I hope for is that someone can give me advice on the best way to go from here. I seriously have never done this before and anyone who has is not known to me either. Thank you again for your time and energy! :D

--Spike (talk) 23:51, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Safeway is not a franchise. --70.108.232.148 (talk) 17:36, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

It's not a franchise system. The company directly operates all its stores. --Coolcaesar (talk) 09:08, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Products?

Under the "Products" section on the right side of the article, Western Union is listed as being one of Safeway's products offered. Can one really consider a wire transfer to be a product? It's more like a service. Dmarquard (talk) 16:36, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Quality

Needs to state that Safeway is notorious of treating employees very badly. They are a very bad company to work for. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.116.254.4 (talk) 21:43, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Opinion! Not my experience with Safeway —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.245.27.141 (talk) 22:05, 18 March 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Texas acquisitions

Safeway bought a very prestigious chain of stores in Houston in the 70's. It was a complete failure. The same stores were later sold to Apple Tree. I can't remember the name of the chain, but they were Houston's equivalent of Dallas' Tom Thumb.

The recent acquisition of Randall's seems to be following a similar path. The first thing they did was close some very popular Randall's stores. DaveCrane (talk) 20:25, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Hawaii

There are seventeen Safeway stores in the State of Hawaii. This can be verified by accessing the Safeway homepage and searching for stores in Hawaii72.235.31.198 (talk) 09:13, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

[edit] MOVE article to Safeway

As I'm unable to do it myself, and rather cautious too, I'm appealing to administrators.

The current Safeway article would be better used as a disambiguation page (I notice the Safeway (disambiguation) article redirects there). All other Safeway supermarket chains have been defunct for at least two years (The Australian Safeway brand disappeared in '09, the others disappeared around 2004). When people search Safeway I believe they're looking for this article.

If someone wants to create a vote for this then please do, I see no good reason for not having this article under the 'Safeway' heading. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Quackth (talkcontribs) 20:02, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

[edit] 2011 Tucson shootings section

I have deleted this section as the location of the shootings being a Safeway is irrelevant to the event. It did not affect Safeway Inc, nor did Safeway Inc have any influence on the shooter's actions. Katie-e (talk) 03:00, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
