I heard that this town is in three different time zones. Is this true, or even possible?

It is right on the border of quite a few time zones, yes. It is right around Eastern Time, Central time, and a time zone that is always Eastern Standard (doesn't observe daylight saving time). It makes things very complicated and confusing. Luckily, legislation should help fix this this coming April (2006).

Effective April 2006, this phenomenon no longer exists. Santa Claus, Indiana and its neighboring towns are all on Central Time, and all observe daylight savings time.

Does anyone know the name of the man who sat as Santa Claus for many years -- 50s, 60s and maybe earlier -- in Santa Claus, Indiana?

You are likely referring to Jim Yellig, who portrayed Santa Claus at Santa Claus Land (now Holiday World) from 1946 until his death in the 1980's. Charles Howard was another famous Santa Claus associated with the town of Santa Claus. After he had only a handful of students at his first Santa School in Albion, New York, he held an enormously successful Santa School in Santa Claus, Indiana's Candy Castle in 1938 that received national publicity. Charles went on to national fame and became the first Santa in Macy's parade. Interestingly enough, Jim Yellig was a student in Charles Howard's Santa School in 1938.

[edit] Santa Claus and its Name

The town of Santa Claus received its name in 1856 not 1849. Before then the town was called Santa Fe/Santa Fee

Charles Howard was not the first Macy's Parade Santa. The parade started in 1924. Howard was in the parade from 1948-1965. Jim Yellig passes away in 1984. He was replaced by Ray Jochum. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.23.115.66 (talk) 14:22, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
