Was the stop called "Tenley Circle" or just "Tenley Town"? I ask because the latter is on signage at some stations (spotted it at Metro Center, for example). Frankg 02:26, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

"Tenley Circle" was the original planned name for the station. I'm not certain whether or not the station actually opened with that name, though. SchuminWeb (Talk) 02:32, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

PR issue?

The article says, "Originally, the station was named simply 'Tenley Circle'; however, American University paid WMATA to change the name for public relations purposes." What was their reasoning? Why is Tenleytown better than Tenley Circle? I'd like to see that explained. Beginning 02:39, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Right, but I take the article to mean that the college felt there was some sort of difference between Tenley Circle and Tenleytown. Otherwise, why would they have requested that it be changed, if they in fact did so? (There's no source, of course.) Should we not explain that? Beginning 23:26, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

I placed a {{fact}} tag on that, because it needs a citation. It could very well fall under Metro's station renaming policy, where if a jurisdiction wants a station renamed, they may do so, but must pay to update all the signage. That's how we recently got Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood, Archives-Navy Mem'l-Penn Quarter, and New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U, after all. SchuminWeb (Talk) 01:18, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

That would unfortunately be original research (darn!). What's funny, though, is that the Tenleytown-AU station name isn't that different from other similarly-named stations: Virginia Square-GMU, and Foggy Bottom-GWU (I realize there are others, but those college-style names are more recent than Tenleytown-AU). Thus why the fuss about Tenleytown? Additionally, other stations had their names changed early on - you don't see stations named "Marine Barracks", "Weapons Depot", or "Zoological Park", do you? Must...find...answer... But I agree that it's odd to have "fuss," as you said, about a name change, which is why it stands out even more in this article. Beginning 03:26, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
