[edit] The Market between Buyers and Sellers of Tobacco Crops
I think it warrants a section that details how the buying and selling of tobacco crops has changed over the years. Previously tobacco was bought and sold in an open air auction/market between farmers and big companies. That has shifted to where big companies contract out tobacco production with farmers directly and this has caused the open market auction of tobacco to collapse. 15:02, 13 August 2010 Albyva (talk | contribs)
[edit] Spanish Monopoly prior to Rolfe
If tobacco was used all over the pre-columbian Americas why would Spain have a monopoly. Neither this page nor the History of tobacco page speak to this.
[edit] Don't forget what tobacco truly is
It seems this article is mainly focused on the health issues associated with tobacco, the means of consumption and the demographics concerning its' consumption, but seems to only mention that it is a psychoactive drug. All articles concerning drugs explain their effects on humans, and this article should be no different. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.202.227.125 (talk) 18:02, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
- I agree. I came here to see about the psychological effects of tobacco -- I honestly don't understand the rationale for consuming tobacco as I have always felt nothing when I smoke. I found absolutely no mention of the psychoactive effects. With such a high profile article, I can only assume it was avoided purposely. I'm surprised to see such bias within wikipedia. --174.125.226.42 (talk) 03:16, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
[edit] The toxicity of smoking
"Toxicity is the degree to which a substance can damage an organism." — from the Wiki article on "toxicity" The Wiki artcle on the health effects of smoking offers plenty of evidence and makes it abundantly clear that tobacco smoke has a fairly high degree of toxicity. In short it's toxic. Tobacco for personal use is a toxic substance. Any article covering and aspect of tobacco production and use should make it clear that it is raised by and large for personal use, as so used is toxic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tonygumbrell (talk • contribs) 01:04, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
- What's your point? You might want to read what Paracelsus said about toxicology. Frotz (talk) 23:42, 30 April 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Entheogen
The word should be removed. Its nonsense pharmacologically to describe nicotine that way, and there are no anthropological sources cited to support the assertion that tobacco was used as an entheogen. Watson Ladd (talk) 03:06, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
- There is copious proof showing that tobacco was and still is used in Native American prayer. See Pipestone_National_Monument. Google for "tobacco" and "prayer". Frotz (talk) 15:25, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Tobacco as a protein source
Google Tobacco as a Potential Food Source and Smoke Material by SD KUNG. Sounds interesting. Anybody has an insight on this to include it into the article? Komitsuki (talk) 04:52, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
