Intercontinental University is in Culver City not Westchester. It is close to Westchester, though.

[edit] Otis buildings

The Theme Building and E. Noyes architecture on the Otis campus are, in fact, rather relevant and significant to both local residents and the general public. Well, OK, maybe just the architecture geeks care so much about the IBM building. Still, it is important and worth including.

[edit] Borders of Westchester

I grew up in Westchester in the 60's and 70's. We always considered the 405 as the eastern border of Westchester. Anything east of that was Inglewood. Also we considered Pershing Dr. the western limit of Westchester even though I believe theres a street sign on Manchester near Westchester High that says "Playa Del Rey". the article states: "The Westchester Neighbors Association defines its boundaries as "the area within the City of Los Angeles: east of Sepulveda Boulevard, north of Manchester Avenue and west of the I/S 405 Freeway (San Diego Fwy)."[1]

That defines the borders of the Westchester Neighbors Association - not Westchester. I live in Kentwood which is west of Sepulveda but still in Westchester. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.148.127.169 (talk) 03:32, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

I agree. I lived in Westchester from 1970-1978 and there was no "covenant-enforced segregation" that I could see. I went to Westchester Lutheran School on Sepulveda Blvd., and it was definitely not white only! In fact, I think I'll go back and edit that statement out; it's inflammatory and unsubstantiated.Henitsirk (talk) 01:37, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

But of course there were restrictive covenants when Westchester and many other all-white suburbs were laid out. If you examine the deeds, they are probably still there, although they are not enforceable in the courts. Still, you have the right to remove an unsourced statement even though it is palpably true and definitely not inflammatory — only informative. [edit] Airline offices

There has been some posting and removal of a list of three airline offices in Westchester. I was the second one to take the list back out. I did this because airline offices aren't particularly noteworthy, especially closed ones. There are airline offices in lots of cities, and having two of the offices already closed is especially trivial. --Beirne (talk) 18:26, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

But this isn't an article about a large city - this is an article about a specific community, and therefore contains more specific information. Yes, a lot of cities have airline offices, but they tend to be in specific communities. Westchester makes it money from having aviation-related businesses, so it is natural that airlines would establish offices in Westchester. Also, the first one to take it was an IP address user, and the anon doesn't seem to be much of an active contributor. WhisperToMe (talk) 18:32, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
The fact that Westchester has LAX is interesting, and that's the important thing in the article. Listing a few ancilliary businesses, 2/3 of which are closed, is not interesting and does not add useful information to the article. But the airport marina coffeeshop has no Wikipedia article. Also these offices have administrative/office functions, while a coffeeshop is a retail operation. If a notable coffee company maintained an administrative office in the premises, I would list it, but I would not list a retail operation of the said coffee company. If you are going to list airline offices, then it will next follow that the article should list rental car businesses, since these are large companies and they even have active operations. --Beirne (talk) 19:14, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
But do these rental car companies have administrative offices in Westchester? The rental car company operations at the airport are the retail operations, like a coffee stand would be. WhisperToMe (talk) 19:23, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
Creating an section on the Westchester economy and only listing the airline for Fiji and two airline offices that left the community does Westchester a disservice. It would be better to have the economy mention the airport, then list businesses that are in Westchester because of the airport. This could include rental car lots, and yes, it could then include Air Pacific. --Beirne (talk) 19:52, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
Well, one thing that could help is that if one has an incomplete list that has useful info that could be expanded upon, one could include the tag {{expand|section}} - That tells the reader that the section is incomplete. IMO what this needs is a summarization of the economic activity in Westchester (see Tysons Corner, Virginia#Economy), and then move on to explain companies operating there, etc. By the way, Continental Airlines had its HQ at LAX until the airline moved to Houston (in the 1980s, I think), so that would be worth explaining (I know the years that CO was at LAX) WhisperToMe (talk) 21:23, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Look, no amount of expansion-tagging will make such a list anything but a collection of fragments found here and there. One expects there to be airline-related facilities near an airport. 1. I am very much listening to Beirne, 72.70.
2. The Los Angeles Times printed an article saying El Segundo to Be Airline Office Site - Division offices of airlines are notable, you just have to make sure that, relatively speaking, they are important to the surrounding community.
3. Please re-read Beirne's post above the one where I suggest the expand tag. His point was that listing some of these is not representative of the economic activity in Westchester. Well, then one should find more information and add it. It is about adding and building.
4. 72.70, the distinction is that these are administrative in function, and not where the customer gets the services.
5. You say " One expects there to be airline-related facilities near an airport" - One expects the retail and service-level infrastructure to always be there, but the administrative offices (from headquarters to division offices) may, or may not, be in proximity to the airport. It is understandable when administrative offices are near the airport (and a way to note a trend in a place's economy), but they are not always in proximity to the airport.
6. If you wonder, yes, I have had similar discussion about similar matters. Look at Tysons Corner, Virginia's Economy Section - It fell into place once another user found an economic report from Fairfax County.

2. This may be, but do you really want the only listed current business in Westchester to be the airline from Fiji?
3. This is where I think some context would help, like I suggested in my last post. Then businesses can be added. If there is more to the Westchester economy than the airport then that should be included, too. I won't be much help, though, as I haven't lived near Westchester in over 35 years.
4. If the only administrative businesses in Westchester are either defunct or are minor airlines, then it seems reasonable to include some retail businesses like Hertz that aren't common in other communities.
5. As mentioned above, I don't mind focusing on the airport, it just needs to have more context.
6. The Tyson's Corner one is just OK, but it at least has more content.

2. I think the best way to resolve all this is to find a source that has an economic overview of the Westchester community. The source may explain how the industry developed, etc. I found similar stuff for El Segundo, California#Economy, which has airline offices too. BTW the China Airlines office moved, at some point, from by LAX to El Segundo.
3. I looked at the Westchester-Playa Neighborhood Council site, but I couldn't really find anything that describes the economy at length.
