Notes[edit]

  • As of 2007, this is the closest finish in Indy 500 history. Little Al beat Scott Goodyear by .0331 of a second.

The official margin of victory was scored as 0.043 seconds. However, a strange circumstance hangs over that finish, since the DATA-1 transponder in Al Unser, Jr.'s car was not in the standard location. The scoring transponder was supposed to be in the left sidepod near the midpoint of the car, but Unser's Galmer chassis would not allow it to fit. So they instead put it in the nose. Goodyear's Lola had it in the sidepod, so when the cars crossed the finish line, mathematically, the margin should be a tick less than 0.043 (since the Unser's car was scored "earlier" that it should have been), but it could not be officially calculated by the scoring computer. If 0.0331 seconds is a "calculated" (i.e., estimated) margin, then it could be noted, but clarified as "estimated." Neither USAC nor the Speedway has decided to create such an estimation, and accepts 0.043 as "official." Odd because with today's computers, you could probably do it rather easily. "extracated" is not a word. "extricated" means to remove someone from wreckage or entanglement Jimmyd787 (talk) 22:48, 25 April 2009 (UTC) jimmyd787[reply]

Be bold and make the correction instead of talking about it. Doctorindy (talk) 12:33, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
