Adding teams[edit]

After seeing the rash of some crazy BYU fan adding his school and no-one else to the preseason Top 25 list, I propose a new rule:

--if you're going to update the polls, INCLUDE ALL SCHOOLS, NOT JUST YOUR OWN.

The exceptions to this rule are preseason polls that release a team per day (such as Athlon, Phil Steele's, et al). --ChicosBailBonds (talk) 21:10, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Naming conventions[edit]

To smooth things out, I propose the following set of naming guidelines:

  • For long names use abbreviations whenever possible (i.e. "BYU" for "Brigham Young" or "LSU" instead of "Louisiana State"). Exceptions are for schools whose abbreviations could stand for more than one school, where you should use the full name to refer to them (e.g. "Southern California" and "South Carolina" instead of the shared "USC", or "Ohio State" and "Oregon State" since they both use "OSU"). Be consistent: if, for instance, South Carolina were to drop out and Southern Cal would remain, do NOT switch over to "USC" to reference the Trojans.
  • Nicknames/team names are not acceptable, even if they are related to the school name (e.g. use "Missouri" instead of "Mizzou")
  • Spell out all "States" and "Techs": keep "A&M" a shared abbreviation
  • Otherwise, just use your best judgement

Remove?[edit]

There are about three polls on here which are not mainstream and accepted. The other polls in this article are used frequently by many in the sports and media world. Maybe we should remove those polls which are not as common and save the article for the polls which are more respected. NeuGye (talk) 13:58, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Seriously. I see no problem with the large table of various pre-season polls, so how about the same thing for final rankings in the polls here. There doesn't seem to be reliable coverage of the BCS Fan Poll in the least so no reason to have it reproduced fully here except for promotion of the website. Maybe make it an external link or something with its pre-season and final rankings in a table with many others. 66.177.175.115 (talk) 22:25, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Since no one objected or even said anything I'm going to go ahead and remove the three less common polls. If that starts a discussion on here then all the better. 66.177.175.115 (talk) 21:16, 11 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There was a previous discussion about what polls to include: Talk:2007 NCAA Division I FBS football rankings#Preseason polls. In short, including all that can be sourced in addition to the main AP/Coaches/BCS was agreed upon. I was of the side that wanted to move non-main polls to their own page, which gives these less importance then which seems appropriate to me. Inclusion of all polls (that can be refereed) seems more valuable than elimination. MECUtalk 13:24, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
