Switzerland

Should the squad list for Switzerland be changed to be sorted by position like the other nations squads or left sorted by player number? Tubby23 (talk) 02:51, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

Protocol calls for squads to be listed by number if they're known but if they haven't been released yet then list the players by position. On another note, the lines in between players of different positions is completely unnecessary and actually against guidelines. Old club vs. new club

Why is it that some contributors to this article rather write down a player's 2010/2011 club side than the actual 2009/2010 club side the player was playing at, in case of a player switching clubs? National pride? I guess some folks think it makes a national football team look better when a member is at FC Liverpool instead of Standard Liege, and the same goes for Schalke vs. Kaiserslautern, whereas the players involved where at Standard Liege and Kaiserslautern respectively in the 2009/2010 season. I propose contributors put the player's 2009/2010 club side behind the player's name and details and not the 2010/2011 team, in case a player is about to switch teams this summer. (By the way, the international transfer window only opens on 1/7/2010, well into the tournament.) Matthijs J (talk)

Based on what I've learned from contributing to football squads is that we would list the team a player played for during the 2009-2010 season. Then if the player was on loan we write a footnote saying for example, "Jozy Altidore was on loan to Hull City in the run up to the tournament from Villarreal" while listing his club as Hull City. Also if the player is changing clubs during the transfer window we would write "Milan Jovanović will join Liverpool after the tournament from Standard Liege" while listing his club as Standard Liege. Like ClubOranje^T said, the international transfer window does not open until July 1, the same applies to players who go on a season-long loan, they don't technically return to their parent club until that time. Spartan008 (talk) 17:54, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

International transfer is not opened on 1 July (it has no exact date). the International Transfer Certificate issued all the year (for free agent). But the international transfer is permitted unless the new national's transfer windows is opened, so it may happened on 1 July or even 6 July (first working date) or earlier.

Using the old club is discussed in 2006 FIFA World Cup. their performance in old club made them earn call-up, not the new one. But in 2006 edition we also use the club they loaned FROM (not to), i didn't remember the reason is. Matthew_hk tc 06:15, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

This is getting increasingly annoying. Who are these stupid c*nts putting down players' 2010/2011 season clubs??? The 2010 World Cup is held after the 2009/2010 season but still BEFORE the 2010/2011 season gets underway. Secondly, the 2010 World Cup starts BEFORE the transfer window opening date of 1 July 2010. All players contracted to a club, start the 2010 World Cup as a player of their 2009/2010 season clubs, and 2010 clubs in case of countries with a summer league like Brazil. Matthijs J (talk)

What about unattached players? I've seen that Robert Koren of Slovenia is listed as an unattached player, but he has played the whole 2009-10 season with WBA. So why he's not listed as a WBA player? Other players listed as unattached are Craig Moore of Australia, who played with Kavala until March 31, and two New Zealand players: Dave Mulligan who played until "the end of 2009-10 season" with Wellington Phoenix and Simon Elliott that didn't played for any team after being released from San Jose Earthquakes at the end of 2009. My opinion on these players are as follows; Simon Elliot is for sure unattached because he was released at the end of the MLS season in November 2009. I think Robert Koren should be listed as a West Brom player since he was with them the entire season. As for Craig Moore and Dave Mulligan, it's iffy because they both haven't been with their clubs and we are now approaching June. Granted we shouldn't base this on how long it's been since they've played club football but we shouldn't just default simply to the last club they were with. David Villa is officially FC Barcelona player since May 21st 2010, he signed his contract and has even been presented at the stadium to the press and supporters. North Korea

North Korea squad has more players than indicated, 30, on the list. And I can't really find any article/news on the announcement of the DPRK squad list on the major websites like FIFA, BBC, skysports, ESPN, goal.com, etc. It's even untraceble on Japanese/Korean websites, it seems. The majority of the squads in this article are preliminary and don't think just because we show that Australia has one more player than everyone else that it is going to harm the integrity of the article. There are far bigger issues like making sure all the player's ages are as of the start of the tournament (June 11, 2010), that we only show caps as some right now show caps and goals, and that each player's club for the past season is shown (2009-2010) not for the following season. New Zealand issue

The flag that is placed next to a club should be the flag of the national association to which the club is affiliated. AS Monaco FC is affiliated to the French Football Federation, hence the French flag, and Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham are affiliated to the Football Association of Wales, hence the Welsh flag. I don't know which national association Wellington Phoenix is affiliated to, but I would assume that it would be the New Zealand one. – PeeJay 22:05, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Wellington Phoenix is a New Zealand-based club, but played in the Australian A-League, so it should use Australian flag icons, because in a sporting world they're essentially an Australian league team. So you're saying that just because Wellington Phoenix play in the A-League they should have the Australian flag? Cobblers! That's like saying that Toronto FC should use the United States flag instead of the Canadian flag just because they play in Major League Soccer, or Cardiff City and Swansea City should use the English flag because they play in The Football League. Like I said, flags denote the national association to which a club is affiliated. Really sorry, I didn't read your previous post clearly about the affiliation. I guess you're right, I found this in Wellington Phoenix FC article: FFA finalised a three-year A-League licence to New Zealand Football who then sub-let the licence to the Wellington-based franchise. New Zealand Football is the national association for New Zealand, so forget my previous comments, New Zealand flag should be used. After all Jonathan Mensah is surely a Granada CF player. According to transfermarkt.de he has left Free State Stars in november 2009 (7 months ago!) to join Udinese, and on january he's gone on loan to Granada CF (http://www.transfermarkt.de/de/jonathan-mensah/transfers/spieler_110622.html). But also on Granada CF website is possible to see that Mensah is a Granada CF player, from 26th december's news when he arrived to Spain (http://www.granadacf.es/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=516:el-granadacf&catid=34:ultimas-noticias&Itemid=59) to 21st May's news (http://granadacf.es/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=735:mas&catid=34:ultimas-noticias&Itemid=59) when his convocation for the Ghanaian National team is mentioned. And on the Free State Stars website is possible to read an interview to the coach in which is say, on 20th January 2010, that Mensah is "lost to an overseas club" (http://www.freestatestars.co.za/news.asp?id=291). All Italian players from home-based clubs?

Since Fabio Cannavaro transferred to Al-Ahli, Italy is no longer a team with all players playing for home-based clubs. It should be noted that Cannavaro became officially part of Al-Ahli on 2 June 2010, a day after the official squads were named (on 1 June 2010). So on 1 June 2010, Cannavaro was still contracted to Juventus, but I don't know if that matters. Maybe the clubs listed in the article only apply to the players as of the say that the squads became official...? Should we keep it as it is or change Fabio Cannavaro's club?

Clubs shown here are the ones the player belonged to fat the start of the tournament. Despite having a pre-agreement to join Shalke for next season, he was still with Kaiserslauten, and listed as such by FIFA for the tournament records. Cheers --ClubOranje^T 16:37, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Arsenal count incorrect?

The count for Arsenal is 10 players, but I count 11 total - 4 for the French national team, 2 Netherlands, 1 Mexico, 1 Cameroon, 1 Cote d'Ivoire, 1 Spain, 1 Denmark. It would be 12 if you include Senderos as suggested by a previous talk poster.

Serbia quirk

Vladimír Weiss club affiliation

I think FIFA made an error here. FIFA listed Vladimír Weiss with Manchester City, even though he was loaned to Bolton in Jan 2010, played 13 games with Bolton (no league games with Manchester City 2009-2010), and was with Bolton last when the WC started . His FIFA profile 'Club History' also showed Weiss was with Bolton last:

Also, it wasn't my source. The source existed before I started watching this page. I simply looked at the source and discovered that the edit added information not contained in the source. No you should not put an asterisk next to the player. At best you might want to consider changing it and adding a WP:RS that shows that FIFA was wrong and that Vladimír Weiss was playing for a club other than that which FIFA recognised him playing at when the tournament began. By 'sourcing' I mean using FIFA as a source, but nevermind. Not sure why you didn't see it, but the second link showed the dates Weiss played for Bolton until May 9th, 2010 (Bolton's last game). A check of Bolton's website at http://www.bwfc.co.uk/page/Fixtures/0,,1004~2009,00.html confirmed them (scroll to bottom then click on 'MR' to access match reports with players list). Bolton's Weiss profile also showed he played most of his games with Bolton: http://www.bwfc.co.uk/page/ProfilesDetail/0,,1004~44925,00.html. As I said, FIFA listed other players with the 'borrowing' club, not the original club. See Cáceres (loaned to Juventus), Giovani dos Santos (loaned to Galatasaray), Hart (loaned to Birmingham City), Robinho (loaned to Santos), etc.

Care to do the editing? I edited the article to improve the accuracy, not to get into a debate about proving whether FIFA is right/wrong. PeeJay, that's totally inconsistent. As I mentioned (please note the examples I provided above), other loan players are listed with the loan clubs, not their 'parent' clubs. Joe Hart is a Manchester City player, but listed with Birmingham City. [5] Robinho is a Manchester City player, but listed with Santos. [6] There are many others on this list (Cáceres, Giovani dos Santos, etc.) that are all listed with their LOAN clubs, not their 'PARENT' club. How do you justify this?

Walter, the link you copied is Weiss's Bolton Wanderer profile. How can you look at it and say you 'need a reliable source that indicates he was at Bolton'? Did you even look at it? You can verify his games by cross-referring his game log [7] with Bolton's match reports [8]. They are too numerous for me to list them all here, but for what it's worth his last game before the World Cup was with Bolton [9]. I don't know how FIFA look at loans, you can ask them. I do know that FIFA list the other loan players with the loaned-to clubs (please check the loan players I listed!). What does FIFA's loan policy have to do with it? Listing Weiss with Manchester City is inaccurate, as Weiss played with Bolton, not Manchester City, up until the World Cup. As I stated FIFA may not be correct. If we are to go with the criteria discussed above under 'Old club vs. new club': "Club should be listed as the club the player was with a the start of the tournament." then Bolton should be used. Walter, if you're so interested in FIFA's loan policy (I don't see why that's relevant), I suggest you provide that yourself as I'm not the one arguing that FIFA's loan policy is relevant here. I've already provided numerous sources showing Weiss was with Bolton, and that other players on loan are listed with their loan teams. Just to get my two cents in, I agree with Zzsignup. Regardless of what FIFA's policy is, it was agreed upon that the club a player was with in the run up to the tournament would be displayed therefore Weiss should be listed as a Bolton Wanderers player. FIFA isn't infallible and quite frankly I think they just made a mistake in listing him with Man City. As you well know, many other players are listed where they were on loan so I don't see why this should be any different just because FIFA didn't accurately list his club. FIFA appears to be inconsistent in this case. Although WP is verifiability, not truth, where there are conflicting sources the source known to be correct should be used. As it is verifiable that Weiss was on loan to Bolton, and it would be consistent with all the other loan players at the tournament to show the loan club, that is what should be shown (accepting previous consensus to show loan clubs rather than parent clubs). As the FIFA document is used as a general source for the bulk of the information, a footnote to note the inconsistency should be provided, as well as an alternative WP:V source to cover the Weiss situation at Bolton.--ClubOranje^T 21:16, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
