[edit] Those old news briefs

I remember back in the 1980s when ABC ran news briefs during breaks from programming. There was even a sports brief (done by Dick Schapp) and a business brief. These briefs always had me associate ABC News with the 1980s. And also, what about the old Weekend Report? If you don't believe the importance of mentioning ABC's prior use of briefs, how come briefs are mentioned in the CBS News article? SOMEONE PLEASE GET THE FACTS AND POST ABOUT THIS UNFORGETTABLE SEGMENT OF ABC NEWS. -Amit

[edit] Requested move

The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: page moved. The reverse of this proposal has been well discussed in the past and has not received consensus. This page should not be moved without a discussion that shows a clear consensus to support a move to a new title. Vegaswikian (talk) 19:11, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

ABC News (US)ABC News

This page was moved without discussion and the re-direct was edited so that I cannot move it back. Georgia guy (talk) 15:32, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

  • Oppose. Not the primary topic, ABC News should be turned into a disambiguation page. Jenks24 (talk) 16:47, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
    • Please explain why it is not the primary topic. Georgia guy (talk) 16:51, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
      • I think that ABC News (Albania) and ABC News (Australia) are just as primary as the US one. I am, however, willing to be persuaded otherwise; could you please show me how the US version is the primary topic? Jenks24 (talk) 17:19, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
        • It is the most well-known meaning. The dis-ambiguation page is at ABC News (disambiguation). Georgia guy (talk) 17:27, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
          • I disagree. It is the most well-known meaning in the US, but certainly not in Albania and Australia. Yes, my proposal was to make ABC News a disambiguation page and make ABC News (disambiguation) a redirect to it. Jenks24 (talk) 17:51, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
            • How about internationally?? Which of these meanings is the most well-known one internationally?? Georgia guy (talk) 17:55, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
              • That's what I'm trying to say, internationally I'm not seeing any evidence that the American version is the primary topic. Jenks24 (talk) 18:10, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
                • Well, you're from Australia, and you just want Wikipedia to favor Australia more. Before making any more comments, please wait until someone who is neither me nor you post in this section. Georgia guy (talk) 18:14, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
                  • Please refrain from making allegations about fellow editors; it does your cause no good at all. I have asked for evidence that the US version is the primary topic and you have not provided any, so I will remain an oppose. I agree that this thread between has degenerated and, as such, this will be my last post to this requested move, but I will note that I only kept commenting because you continued to ask questions of me and I thought we might have a productive discussion. Happy editing, Jenks24 (talk) 18:35, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
                  • I've lived most of my life in California, never been to Australia or Albania (or Armenia, Argentina, Austria ...); yet I'm bothered by US-centrism. —Tamfang (talk) 20:30, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
  • Support reversal of recent undiscussed move from stable title. The US article had 22,749 pageviews last month compared to 607 for Albania and 5,635 for Australia. The US article also has more than three times the number of incoming wikilinks as does the Australia article. These are two of the objective criteria suggested at WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Per WP:TWODABS we don't really need a dab page for only three articles; in any case the Australia article should be mentioned in the hatnote so readers can get there with one click, as quickly as through a dab page. Besides, if the article is moved to ABC News (US) literally thousands of incoming links would need to be fixed. Station1 (talk) 19:19, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
  • I now support the move due to Station1's very logical argument. Thank you for the information on page views and incoming links, Jenks24 (talk) 19:38, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
  • Comment: As stated by others, a unilateral move should not have been made. There have already been various rename and move discussions such as Talk:ABC News/Archive 1#Proposed Move from ABC News (USA) to ABC News and Talk:ABC News/Archive 1#Requested move. Much worse, the edit to the resulting redirect was basically an unattributed cut and paste move of ABC News (disambiguation). [1] Thus, from a Wikipedia policy point of view, it should be moved back even if this discussion ultimately results in no consensus. That said, I still would not mind a title like American Broadcasting Company News. Zzyzx11 (talk) 05:41, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
  • Oppose varying primary topics depending on North America (US network) or Australasia (Aus network). Disambiguation page should be at primary name. (now if we can only fix Cambridge, Plymouth and Birmingham...) 64.229.100.45 (talk) 06:02, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
  • Oppose American chauvinism. Just because there are more Americans than Australians does not mean the American usage automatically trumps anything else. McLerristarr | Mclay1 07:58, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
  • Comment: Zzyzx11 is entirely correct that this page should not have been moved to a new title without discussion, and that the disambiguation page should not have been cut-and-paste copied. As a temporary fix, I have redirected ABC News to this article; this restores the status quo ante for all of the (hundreds and hundreds) of other articles that contain links to that title, as well as for external links. Once this discussion is completed, either the disambiguation page or this article can be moved (not copied and pasted) to the plain title in accordance with whatever the consensus turns out to be. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 13:36, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
  • Support: This article is the primary topic for ABC News, as documented by Station1. Also, the disambiguation was done without consensus. Quigley (talk) 21:02, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
  • Oppose. The mind boggles. Still, not as bad as State University. No primary topic so the undisambiguated name should be a DAB. 12:39, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
