I'm not sure that the term "Indian" in the department's name actually does refer to status Indians under the Indian Act. I think it may refer to the term "Indian" under the Canadian Constitution, which has been interpreted by the courts to include Inuit, and likely includes all other Aboriginal Peoples as well. That would be more in line with the department's mandate too. However, I don't have any specific source to support this. Does anyone know one way or another? New Name[edit]

As of May 18, 2011, the department's name has changed to Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada. More details are here Change to the Department's Name. Thank you. (AANDC AADNC (talk) 20:30, 17 August 2011 (UTC))
