Contested deletion[edit]

This article should not be speedily deleted for lack of asserted importance because... this is a work under construction at the OSTP Black History Month Editathon --Djembayz (talk) 23:46, 24 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Have added a lead paragraph to explain the significance of this list. This list is important for the use of WikiProject Women scientists, and may be moved to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Women scientists/Worklist space if necessary. --Djembayz (talk) 03:17, 25 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Contested deletion[edit]

This article should not be speedily deleted for lack of asserted importance because... Nowhere else online is there a list of American American women with PhDs. This is important information for the world. --Tygrandison (talk) 13:59, 25 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Contested deletion[edit]

This article should not be speedily deleted for lack of asserted importance because it provides an active repository of a smaller community within the computer and information sciences, African American women with relevant doctorates, which may be difficult to ascertain otherwise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.137.171.31 (talk) 17:51, 25 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

advice[edit]

I'm not sure this is a justifiable list, but it will need to be dealt with at AfD, not speedy. The relevant policy is WP:NOT DIRECTORY. DGG (at NYPL) -- reply here 21:19, 25 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

since we do not seem to have any precedent for lists of this sort as lists, perhaps it would make more sense as an article on the subject, so I moved the page to the title from List of African American women ... . There would then be content that could be added. The source for the list is apparently the report cited by ref, , and it would seem reliable, tho of course it would be good to find a direct link for it. "win a PhD" and number of years to list[edit]

Re: this rv: [1]:

A PhD isn't something you "win." You earn it, through hard work on research. Also, how many years are we going to list here in the lead? ― Padenton|   14:11, 14 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

"Win" is a valid word in this context and the one used in the citation. Listing all the years would be best but a broad spread is still useful; a single point of data is less useful that the overall trend. Neither is a good reason to simply wipe the facts and citations. - AdamBMorgan (talk) 15:21, 14 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Is "Black" or "black" more in line with Wikipedia standards when describing people with African-American ethnicity?[edit]

Most articles seem to use "black", but this article uses "Black." As a newer editor, I'm not sure which is more Wikipedia-y. -- Hilarysk (talk) 17:05, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Move discussion in progress[edit]

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:African-American gospel which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 23:17, 18 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Add notable persons[edit]

As a disclaimer I am not a woman also am not clear if this article is still being edited. I'm teaching a university course called Internet & Society and will have students learning to contribute to Wikipedia this term and expect that articles included in the Women in Technology Project will get some attention, we devote a few weeks to discussing underrepresentation in internet related professions. Here are a few notable African-American women in computer science I believe should be included here.

@Shackpoet: Hello! We cannot add people to the list that don't have Wikipedia articles already, because notability is not yet established. I did however add the two people you suggested that do have Wikipedia articles (Timnit Gebru, Joy Buolamwini). Thank you and please feel free to add more suggestions here to the talk page or edit the article. Jooojay (talk) 23:45, 11 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jooojay: Thanks for the clarification over notability (sigh), I will certainly be back or have my students consider edits to the article. Shackpoet (talk) 01:08, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Shackpoet: that sounds good! I added a few more people to this list that already have Wikipedia articles today. There are quite a few working lists of notable people missing articles (often used during edit-athons). Perhaps Yeshimabeit Milner and Rediet Abebe might be found on one of those list too? Establishing notability on bios for living people can be challenging, especially for new editor. If I can help, please feel free to leave me a message on my talk page. Jooojay (talk) 01:37, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Rediet Abebe had an article already and was added today too. Jooojay (talk) 01:39, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Shackpoet, thank you for bringing this up! This sounds like a very interesting class. I added Yeshimabeit Milner to the list of women mathematicians who need biographies. I feel think that either she or Data for Black Lives could be considered notable, but I'm not totally sure and seems like that sort of thing is a matter for debate. I compiled a list of sources about her and Data for Black Lives in a draft. Making articles is I think more difficult than regular editing. But maybe by time your class gets to it the draft will be improved, who knows. I see Jooojay already offered but if you have questions feel free to post on my talk page as well :) Anyone is more than welcome to contribute, whether or not you're female or African-American. It doesn't look like there were a lot of changes going on at the time you posted this, but you could say all of Wikipedia is still being edited. See WP:WORKINPROGRESS Best of luck in your class! IllQuill (talk) 22:59, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Please note, Yeshimabeit Milner has since been added to Wikipedia as a stub article, and also added to this list. Jooojay (talk) 01:01, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
