Slaves enlisting in the war

Slaves were at first not allowed to enlist because the patriots thought they would use the weapons to revolt against the owners and slavery. Later in the war when the patriots were desperate for more soldiers they decided that slaves were there ONLY choice!! Lucky for the Patriots the ones that enlisted felt as strongly about breaking away as the Patriots did and when they were armed the immediately started to fight! The African Americans did so well... some of them lasted until the battle at Yorktown, the final battle of the Revolutionary war!! The Patriots were glad that they decided to enlist the slaves. Although all of the slaves didn't get freed after the war, a lot of them did! It was a great start to the end of slavery!!!

My historical question is how did this hypothetical liberation of African-American slaves work? Slaves were considered the property of their owners. Could a slave enlist without the permission of their owner? Could they be freed without the permission of their owner? In what colonies was this possible? In some Northern colonies, slavery did not officially exist. In the historically fake Mel Gibson movie, "The Patriot", a billboard from George Washington posted in North Carolina alledgedly promises slaves who serve in the Continental Army for one year their freedom.

It would be nice to separate the fact from the fiction. I would assume that most African Americans who served in the Continental Army or in the militias were freemen.

More Patriot Slaves?

I am almost positive that this is false. I ave never seen any source other than Wikipedia say that more Slaves fought for the Patriots than for Britain. In fact, I have seen many sources say the opposite. This article states that as many as 9000 former slaves fought for the American military in some form. The Book The Scorpion's Sting (James Oakes, a very credible historian) says that were were as many as 20,000 who fought for the British.
