Proposed rename[edit]

Andrewsfield is obviously not an Airport but what should it be called, the common name appears to be just Andrewsfield or the CAA licence which says Andrewsfield Aerodrome or the postal address which is Saling Airfield. Any ideas. MilborneOne (talk) 19:47, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Aerodrome terminology comes up in General aviation in the United Kingdom as well. I chose to use the word Aerodrome to refer to any formal landing site, based on this source (last para before the Results section on page 5). It also says that technically only the military have airfields, though I know that this is now a common term applied to certain types of aerodrome. The source applies an informal categorisation to aerodromes which uses the terms airport, airfield, and airstrip. Another relevant source is the CAA strategic review of GA. Sections 3.36 - 3.47 (ch.3, pp. 29-30) uses Airport for sites that support predominantly commercial operations, and Airfield for sites that support predominantly general aviation operations. Finally, when it comes to licensing these facilities, the CAA's main guidance is detailed in CAP 168, which is titled "Licensing of Aerodromes", and includes on p. 3 its definition of the word aerodrome. For these reasons, I think that Aerodrome is the most technically accurate word to use, and therefore "Andrewsfield aerodrome" would be the most appropriate name for this article. --FactotEm (talk) 12:05, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mainly because all the others, airfields, aerodromes, airports, airbase, all seem to use the capital in the title. I guess it's a case of "we've always done it that way, why change now".
