Recently I was looking at one of several books of AG’s art. I've been in awe of his work for nearly two decades. Nothing he creates is, - wood or stone rarely retains any of the natural qualities of the material. The smooth plasticity of clay becomes a hard, stone-like material with an imposed surface texture and stone is polished to remove the natural roughness of fractured surfaces.

What make AG’s creations so wonderful is that the natural character of the materials is entirely retained in the finished work: The colour of leaves and stones, the texture of sand and clay, the roughness of twigs and the opacity of natural ice. I can't think of a single work that incorporates any synthetic material. Everything is held together by natural forces such as gravity or surface tension, or by thorns and strips of natural vegetation. All his works are formed from natural objects and most are created in sympathy with their natural surroundings. What makes his work unique is a fundamental philosophy of natural objects arranged in their environment to enhance the existing beauty of nature.

Vandalism

Yeah -- someone seems intent on calling him "Mouldsworthy" ... which is not nearly as funny of a pun as they think. Ah well. --new user

Does anybody know why this page is undergoing the stready stream of vandalism it's been experiencing? It's getting annoying to be fixing it every time I check my watchlist. --Misterwindupbird

Added to my watchlist in order to help keep an eye on it. You could always request temporary protection if the vandalism gets too out of hand. I love Goldsworthys stuff BTW... quercus robur 18:54, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

Quotations

Quote: "This article or section contains too many quotations for an encyclopedic entry." I dont know about anyone else but I dont like this kind of comment on the main page of a site left hanging like graffiti. I found the quotes helpful in understanding the man and his work, and I do wish articles weren't constantly being vandalised by expert wikipedia contributors using these kind of comments and notes - if you want to edit it, edit it boldly, please dont leave litter all over it! Imprint information for first publication

Hi, Jmarob. On two occasions you've removed the original imprint information of books by Goldsworthy and replaced it with what appears to be imprint information relating to recent reprints of the books. However, it is useful for readers to know when the books were first published. I would suggest that you add the reprint information as follows:

This user is spamming Crescent Moon books on wiki. See User talk:Jmarob and contributions: the only edits are to insert these titles into articles. Please assess the inclusion in this article. Ty 01:06, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
If the information is genuine, I don't think there's any problem with including it in the article provided the original information is not removed (which is what Jmarob has been doing). Further Reading section

This section is really unnecessary... it is being spammed by User talk:Jmarob who has a conflict of interest If people want to find books about Andy Goldsworthy they can easily Google them or look them up on Amazon? Artistic Styles

The Moonlit Path was at Petworh, but the Chalk Stones Trail was a five mile walk through the heart of the south downs from Cocking Hill, through the West Dean Woods and ending in West Dean. Problem in the Biography section

There are a few major errors in this article that need attention; most notably, the information taken from the Cass source in the Biography section. The sentence: "It has been said that his gradual drift northwards was "due to a way of life over which he did not have complete control", but that contributing factors were opportunities and desires to work in these areas and "reasons of economy." really seems to have issues. First of all "it has been said" is weak. If the statement has not been made by a) a group of several experts or b) someone of key influence on the subject, then the fact in question probably doesn't meet verifiability. The Cass Sculpture foundation website does not provide an author for the biography nor does it show that it has been reviewed or published, which does not really make it a reliable source. Secondly, though the Cass source is in question, this article seems to almost completely plagiarize its content, putting some direct quotes in quotation marks and leaving bits of quoted material outside, doing very little to paraphrase. My first impulse is to remove the lines altogether, though I do think that his reason for changing location can be found in a better source that can justify its claims, so for now I will leave it alone but might try to make the sentence stronger.Mrathel (talk) 15:44, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

  • Oh, and the "way of life over which he did not have complete control" is painfully vague. Even if it is quoted material, it is poorly written. Its like saying "He moved north because of the way things went" or "he moved north because a lot of things happened that he could not stop". What does this whole sentence say: He moved north because he could not help it, because he wanted to, and because it was economical. Why could he not control it? What specific types of work did it help, and what on earth was the "economy" involved? Mrathel (talk) 15:50, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Preston Polytechnic

When Andy Goldsworthy was a student, the art department of Preston Polytechnic was not in Preston, but in Lancaster, in the Storey Institute. His first catalogued works were made in the garden adjoining this building. Image about to be deleted?

Just a quick query, as part of getting my head around the licensing/etc for a pic of a generic Chalk Stones Trail boulder, I noticed that the image of the Spire is flagged for deletion (no FoP in the US, unlike a couple of the other ones which are from the UK where we do have a FoP of sorts) - what's the handling for something like this? Life and Career Information Outdated

In the Life and Career section, there is a sentence that reads, "He is currently an A.D. White Professor-At-Large at Cornell University." He has not been an A.D. White Professor-At-Large at Cornell University since 2008 so this information needs to be updated. See http://adwhiteprofessors.cornell.edu/all.html
