This means a multiplicity of "isms" without necessity........ confer Ockham, Wittgenstein, etc. etc.

The article is written from a standpoint of antireductionism, for instance claiming that reductionism, or quantitative approaches, are not fruitful in ecology without a citation. The article needs to present antireductionism without endorsing it. And also note that antireductionism does not necessarily mean the abandonment of science or quantitative approaches - the fields of emergence and systems biology attest to this.
