Schools assessment[edit]

Main priority is gathering references to defend claims. Alumni list is useful, but I would suspect not complete.. Photo gallery would be a nice addition Victuallers 19:35, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reverting edit which removed Criticism section[edit]

This article is not an advertisement for Archbishop Mitty.

The criticisms are levied amongst Archbishop Mitty students as well as persons from other schools in the Diocese and local public schools. They shouldn't be deleted simply because they show the school in an unfavorable light; there are plenty of other parts of the article that show AMHS' "good side," and the article as it stands with a criticism section is still objective. In light of this agreement, don't delete the anonymous alumni's opinion. Thanks!

Wikipedia has policies and guidelines, one of the most important of which is verifiability. Even if something is true, if it has not been made available by reliable, verfiabile sources, including it in the article becomes a violation of our no original research policy. To include the criticisms of students, people from the diocese, and local public schools, they need to be documented by someone reliable. I'd accecpt the San Jose Mercury News, the Valley Catholic, the minutes from a meeting of a local school board, possibly the personal website of a student, or some other documentation. Censorship[edit]

Wikipedia is not a public advertisement forum, and as such should not be censored to remove truthful statements which do in fact accurately reflect the happenings of the school.

Do you have an edit in mind? The last major reversion was by me; I deleted some stuff about "Monarch Madness" because the grammar and spelling made it impossible to read, and because it appeared to be trivia. If you let us know which edits you object to, we can probably come to some sort of happy compromise. Zimbardo Cookie Experiment 21:42, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Listing colleges students matriculate to[edit]

Per the school article guidelines, "School articles should also specifically not include:...Lists of colleges and universities that have accepted students from the school". Please do not put that info back. Gtwfan52 (talk) 20:13, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

School article guidelines[edit]

Please keep in mind this is not "Mitty's page on Wikipedia": it is "Wikipedia's page on Mitty".

Things that should be included in a school article are things that are of interest beyond the school community. Things that are different about this school. Every school has dances; unless something is really unique about one (and keep in mind that means it needs to be unique enough that someone outside the school community feels it is unique enough to write a newspaper or magazine article about it), we do not need to talk about it. I have not seen one other school article that discusses what union the teachers belong to (I have not seen them all; not by a long shot, but I watch about 2500 school articles).

The guidelines are very specific about what level of achievement we will discuss. Only the highest possible, which in the US is assumed to be state championships will be discussed. We do not discuss individual students or faculty (unless that student or teacher is themselves notable; ie they have a bio on Wikipedia).

All achievements need to be referenced to an outside source, like a newspaper article or the sanctioning body's website.

When writing an encyclopedia article, adjectives are generally not your friend. We don't say things are unique, exceptional, notable, world-class, state-of-the-art or even important. We state the facts and let the readers draw their conclusions. Also, keep in mind that an encyclopedia article does not have a date on it so terms like currently, recently, last year, in the past several years, etc, are all absolutely meaningless. Don't use phrases or adverbs like that.

This is pretty obviously a fairly important school. There is probably much that can be written on it. This article however is never going to be a publicity vehicle for this private school. Wikipedia is not here to provide publicity for anything. Read the school article guidelines (WP:SCH/AG). Look at some good or featured school articles. Use those things to guide your writing. I will help when I can, but my web access is very limited these days. Happy editing! John from Idegon (talk) 20:16, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
I do agree that some of the information is boring and irrelevant but a lot of the information is actually interesting. Also, a lot of the information on this page cannot be cited because it only occurred inside the school, but this doesn't mean it isn't unique to Mitty (ex: Monarch Madness). What I am saying is that this page should be as informative as possible, but a lot of the information that has to go on this page can't be cited. As a student I just want what is best for the school and not a Edit War. Peace!(Workerbe (talk) 01:47, 4 September 2014 (UTC))[reply]
If it cannot be referenced it cannot be here. I would appreciate you restoring the content to where it was prior to your edits today. Guidelines are very clear on what should and shouldn't be in an article. Who would actually care that someone ranked anyone 38th for anything? But you put that back! And I really fail to see how you think what is there on "Monarch Madness" is useful. It isn't even clear what it is, and even if it were, what interest would it have to someone from Bangor maine or Bhopal, India? That is your target audience, you know. John from Idegon (talk) 03:59, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)And what is best for the school is not at issue here. This is not in any way for the school. It isn't the school's webpage. If you want to promote the school, GoDaddy is =====> thataway. get a webpage. Since you have now stated that you have no interest in what is good for Wikipedia, but only what is good for the school, I am going to undo your edits of today. You have made your motives clear. John from Idegon (talk) 03:59, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I am trying to add references now! Gosh man, I though you would try to help me out!(Workerbe (talk) 01:47, 4 September 2014 (UTC))[reply]
My apologies if that was directed at me. My internet access is very limited these days. Most often I am on my crappy phone and about all I can do is start a new section on a talk page and revert edits. No time right now to even look over the article but hopefully later today. Not done: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit protected}} template. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:22, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Subject is notable (Robert King (writer)), but there is nothing in his article supporting a tie to the school. Reference that and I would support this addition. John from Idegon (talk) 22:44, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Request removal of entire mission statement section as out of guideline (Do I need to form a consensus for this?) and removal of every achievement in the athletics section with the exception of the claim that the women's program was ranked first in the nation by Sports Illustrated. That claim is referenced to SI. all the rest are referenced to a baseball schedule on the school's website, and 99% are for achievements less than state championships, which would be out of guideline anyway. John from Idegon (talk) 22:39, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the mission statement as that was obviously inappropriate for a neutral article. But I would like to see some comments from others about removing the achievements. Regards — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:22, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Missing/outdated information and missing/bad references[edit]

The total number of students enrolled is not up to date since the enrollment size for 2014 is given. The article gives a pretty detailed description of the campus but doesn't mention the John A. and Susan Sobrato Science and Student Life Center. In addition to needing information on men's sports, a section about other notable school clubs and programs such as their speech and debate team and performing arts department. The list of notable alumni should also be revised.

References should be added for the sentences about Kerri Walsh donating a beach volleyball court as well as the date the Schott Family Music Center was opened. The section about the student body gives data for the 2014-2015 school year. Along with being outdated, it doesn't have a citation. The links in the reference section that I clicked on all worked. However, reference number 25 is a link to the school's website which is not a good source because it is not independent of the school and is an official website. Phams99 (talk) 22:12, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The best reference for enrollment data is NCES, which is always two to three years behind. This is an encyclopedia, not an almanac or newspaper. The most up to date info is not the highest priority, the best source is. For the rest of the issues you have pointed out, this article is not edit protected, so unless there is a reason you shouldn't or cannot, just be BOLD and fix it. John from Idegon (talk) 22:46, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! Thanks for the response! I will attempt to be bold and fix the errors whenever I can find some spare time! Phams99 (talk) 04:26, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
