I've found the year of 1448 referenced as the year that the Portuguese established a commercial fortress on Arguin, from Birmingham, David. Trade and Empire in the Atlantic, 1400-1600. London, UK: Routledge, 2000. p 32. L Hamm 02:01, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
