Assistance Dogs[edit]

Please understand that my edits are to make the article more factual - in the US and under the ADA the term is "service animal" commonly referred to as a service dog. Some international groups might prefer the term "assistance dog" but that is not the proper term under the ADA. It is only US centric as the ADA is a US law and much of the information comes from US organizations. —Preceding unsigned comment added by ASDAssoc (talkcontribs) 03:20, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I do not believe the ADA actually "defines" anything about service animals. In fact, the term or anything similar does not appear in the full copy of the ADA at all... as far as I know, the reason it can be quoted as protecting handlers is because animals who are trained to assist the disabled can be and are interpreted as assisting equipment/devices as stated in the act. "Service animal" first seems to appear in "Commonly Asked Questions About Service Animals in Places of Business," similar pamphlets or interpretations, and then in individual state laws.
The reason why this article uses the term "assistance dog" is because that is what is generally accepted as the umbrella term covering service dogs, as well as guide and hearing dogs. To suddenly begin talking about "service animals" may imply only "service" dogs are protected while the others are excluded. However, I've reworded it in the hopes that a middle ground can be reached. Further suggestions are encouraged. Sarrandúin [ Talk + Contribs ] 00:16, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
U.S. Federal statutory laws appear in three formats, the PL (Public Law) as passed by Congress, the USC as entered in U.S. Code (usually identical to the PL) and the CFR or Codes of Federal Regulation. CFRs are written by regulatory agencies to explain how they interpret the law and how they intend to implement it. While service animals are not mentioned in either the PL or USC versions, they are defined in 28 C.F.R. 36.104, regulatory law written by the U.S. Department of Justice to implement title III of the ADA.
The U.S. is not in step with the rest of the world in terminology. There are three types of assistance dogs, only one of which is the "service dog," yet the U.S. stubbornly uses the two terms interchangeably. Kirsten07734 (talk) 08:20, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Police dogs used by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) are specifically expempted from access restrictions by law Australian Federal Police Act 1979 - see section 12A. Pee Tern (talk) 02:42, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Added reference that the term assistance dog is the only term used in the UK. Also added page on diabetic hypo alert dogs and a link from this page. Last of all, added link to Cancer & Bio detection Dogs UK, who oversee many types of assistance dogs in the UK, including hypo alert dogs. User:Weirdgeordie 14:15, 09 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There is a need to merge this page with the page on service dogs. It is confusing that there are 2 different pages under two different terms giving contradictory information, and neither of them particularly clear. In particular, we need significantly more clarity that while the terms are used interchangeably in the USA, in the rest of the world a dog which assists a disabled person is an Assistance dog, while a dog who works for police, military, fire and rescue, etc is a service dog. For that reason I would suggest that this page contain the main information on history etc currently residing on the Service dog page, and have it moved over here, which clear linking and signposting, while more information on other types of service dogs is inserted on the service dog page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wheeled Ciara (talkcontribs) 10:23, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Working dogs? Delta Society[edit]

  • I was puzzled by the sentence that "service dogs might even be working dogs," so I threw a cite query on it.
    • Do you mean dogs such as search-and-rescue, customs dogs? If so, do their owners get ADA coverage (or just in housing?)?
See note above re AFP police dogs. Pee Tern (talk) 02:42, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • If those are the kinds of tasks, the expression "working dogs" is confusing. The term is a generally accepted one for a class of dogs such as Rottweilers (who pull), Huskies (ditto), German Shepherd dog (who herd), etc. Many search-and-rescue and customs dogs are beagles, which are classified differently.
  • I added the sentence on therapy dogs.
  • I added the see also to Delta Society, which does, yes, have its own training program, but its web site is truly portal-like for service dogs.

Plagiarism[edit]

I used paper rater's plagiarism detector on the classification section. The plagiarism detector showed three links. One of the links lead to this page, but the two other pages are:

http://www.wow.com/wiki/Assistance_dog

http://www.digplanet.com/wiki/Assistance_dog

This leads me to think that the page was copied and pasted from these two sources. Badmonkey717 (talk) 20:24, 21 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Badmonkey717: Those pages are mirrors of content from here. In turn, there are strong indications content here being from another wiki article elsewhere, given numerical-style [1][2][3] citations in square-brackets... Most other publications use superscript annotated numerals for citations. -- dsprc [talk] 22:40, 11 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Source article turns out to be this one. Appears to be copy-paste revert of blanked content. References are buried away in page history if any want to dig 'em out. -- dsprc [talk] 22:43, 11 July 2016 (UTC)  Done: IP editor attempting to undo their own damage was culprit. -- dsprc [talk] 22:49, 11 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal to merge this page with Service dog page, and redevelop both pages[edit]

Hi, I would like to check before making major changes to the page on this page and the page on Service dogs. At the moment there are 2 pages, both saying different things, but covering the same topic. The 'correct' term is assistance dog, as supported by Assistance Dog's International, the international body to which most member states in the world seek to affiliate. The term 'service dog' is used colloquially in the USA but not widely outside the USA, and most US law also still avoids this term, as it's technical meaning is wider than simply assistance dog, and also covers several other types of working dogs. I would like to move most of the information currently on the 'Service Dog' page onto the 'Assistance Dog' page, with a clear Disambiguation at the top to redirect anyone using the term 'service dog' to look specifically for information on dogs that support disabled people, as well as providing links to other types of service dogs, and a small discussion on controversies on service dogs in general. I would also like to move a small amount of information from the current assistance dog page back to the service dog page, as the information about dogs who work in court houses and schools are actually good examples of dogs who are service dogs, not assistance dogs so that information is also in the wrong place. PLEASE NOTE that a copy of this message has also been put on the Service dog page, which appears to get slightly more traffic, so please discuss the matter there rather than holding a second conversation here.Hopefully we can have a good discussion on whether we should go ahead and do this, or if there are any other suggestions for resolving the issue. Many thanks Wheeled Ciara (talk) 21:05, 25 August 2018 (UTC) Wheeled Ciara[reply]

Merger proposal:Service dog[edit]

The result of this discussion was merge. Cavalryman (talk) 10:19, 29 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I propose to merge Service dog into this page, it is a clear WP:FORK with the first two paragraphs of the service dog page stating it is a term used in the US for assistance dog. Cavalryman (talk) 10:50, 8 February 2020 (UTC).[reply]

Have just noticed the proposal above, courtesy ping to Wheeled Ciara. Cavalryman (talk) 10:58, 8 February 2020 (UTC).[reply]
  • Support. A clear content WP:FOLK. If the text for both articles were completely retained in the merge then the article would still be below 60kb, which is not WP:TOOBIG. Rationalisation of duplication would reduce it further. William Harristalk 17:49, 8 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Controversies[edit]

Either within the entry or a separate linked entry, there needs to be discussion of controversies regarding assistance dogs and schools, transportation, employment, etc. Blastttt (talk) 01:20, 4 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Blastttt, can you be more specific? Also can you share any sources about these controversies? Cavalryman (talk) 01:54, 4 July 2020 (UTC).[reply]

Sure. Many of the US controversies, particularly "canines in the classroom" are discussed in Rebecca Huss' articles at <ssrn.com>. The US Department of Transportation has debated regulations re service dogs on commercial airlines. Blastttt (talk) 05:45, 4 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Facility Dogs[edit]

This section is US-centric, within other countries therapy and facility dogs are often interchangeable - as in not all therapy dogs are facility dogs but all facility dogs are therapy dogs. Suisaber (talk) 13:05, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
