What does Zertal mean with "Middle Ages"/"Medieval" in Palestine?[edit]

Zertal's definition for Middle Ages/Medieval (MA) isn't clear. All generally known periods have their own abbrev. on p. IX incl. Early Muslim and Mamluk, leaving only one exception: the the Crusader period, but this is an indirect indication of what he considered to be MA, as period definitions can theoretically overlap. Therefore it's not yet possible to wikilink Zertal's term "Medieval" with the Kingdom of Jerusalem, as it is otherwise the norm for any explicit mention of the Crusader period. Some authors can include parts of the later "Early Muslim period" in some discussions of "medieval" processes. I think to remember that at least one author explicitly refused to use the term Middle Ages for the Levant, reserving it for socio-political and economic developments in Europe, which are in part very different from the Middle Eastern ones. Grateful for any clarification, my online search for Zertal's periodisation came out empty. He did work for Haifa U, and the Zinman Institute of Archaeology there offers a hint on its homepage, but it a) musn't be in accord with Zertal, and b) it's not explicit either ("The chronological framework of the Institute's activity includes the Prehistoric periods, the Biblical period of the Bronze and Iron Ages, the Classical period, covering the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine eras, the Early Arab periods and finally the Middle Ages"). Most indications seem to point to Middle Ages = Crusader period (with Ayyubid intermezzos), so w/o any parts of the Fatimid or Mamluk periods. Let's continue searching.
