Spelling[edit]

The correct spelling of this activity is Bölzlschießen.--91.115.161.1 (talk) 07:10, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. The article should be moved to the current REDIRECT Bölzlschießen. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 10:32, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This is not an issue of earthshaking importance, but my opinion is to keep the double ss. As a model, see Johann_Strauss_I, which briefly mentions the ß spelling but mainly uses ss. My sense is that esszet's are normally rendered as double ss's in English, to avoid a symbol unfamiliar to many readers, and the standard of correctness that should be applied here is the English standard. This is also what is done in Ruth Halliwell's book about the Mozart family, the main source for this article.
It's frustrating that the WP Manual of Style does not weigh in on this; we shouldn't have to discuss it for every separate case. Opus33 (talk) 01:20, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Johann Strauss is different because he (and his son) actually spelled the name that way. The English naming of the article for the politician Franz Josef Strauss would support your argument as his name is spelled "Strauß" in German; however, that is quite an anomaly (see acres of discussion at Talk:Franz Josef Strauss and its archives) because his name was regularly used with "ss" in English-language publications. "Bölzlschießen" doesn't get much coverage in English, so there are no sources to support that spelling. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 05:29, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
