Use of this article name[edit]

I believe an article under this name should refer more generally about the athletics in whole at Brigham Young University, not just about the soccer team that appears to be a semi-pro league with the university approval. The current page should be moved to BYU Cougars soccer and the existing page made more generally about all of the sports played under the university athletics department, where certainly there should be a link to the moved article. For examples, see Colorado Buffaloes and Colorado Buffaloes football. This would be more in line with the rest of Wikipedia and how university athletics are handled. If anyone has a problem or complaint or suggestion, please say so here. If nothing is posted within 7 days, I shall make all of the above changes, with the exception that the BYU Cougars article I shall make a redirect to Brigham Young University until someone makes a proper athletics article. --MECUtalk 20:30, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

I agree those changes should be made. Also, you may want to consider moving this to Brigham Young Cougars instead of the initials. I'm not sure on this, it should be whatever they are more commonly referred to. That would at least be an appropriate redirect though. VegaDark 10:07, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
I would prefer BYU Cougars, but I don't know which is "better" or "preferred". BYU is certainly acceptable, and it's more common in my mind, but I also agree that either way the other should be a redirect. --MECUtalk 13:44, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
I noticed that Template:BYUCoach says "Brigham Young Cougars" and not BYU Cougars. Both the article and the template should use the same format, so something needs to be changed. Perhaps someone from BYU could say which one is more commonly used? VegaDark 22:16, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
With no more input or complaints, I moved the page. I choose BYU over the full spelling, but certainly the full spelling could be created and redirected. If it is determined the full spelling is more correct, it could be moved again. --MECUtalk 15:26, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

NCAA Division I status[edit]

I have removed a line in the article that read, "The team could have competed on the NCAA Division I varsity level with full scholarships, but this could have caused a lack of compliance with Title IX, which requires gender equity in collegiate scholarship opportunities." Unless the BYU athletic director issued a statement that specifically said they cannot add men's soccer as a varsity sport due to Title IX, this line has no factual basis. The reason BYU does not sponsor a men's soccer team probably has more to do with economics. BYU currently sponsors 9 men's and 10 women's sports. Adding a varsity team in any sport costs a significant amount of money, and it would be my guess that adding varsity sports is probably not within the budgetary limitations of the BYU athletics department at this time. Regardless, the earlier statement, which specifically identified Title IX as the reason that BYU does not have a varsity men's soccer team, is not factual. --Cougs2000 18:22, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Byucougarsfc.jpg[edit]

Image:Byucougarsfc.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
