Bas Jan Ader's Parents[edit]

Does anyone known whether this artist was the son of Rev Bastiaan Jan Ader (1909-1944) and Johanna Adriana Ader-Appels (died 1994), author of the well known Dutch resistance autobiography "Een Groninger Pastorie in de Storm", and also the couple who hid Johanna-Ruth Dobschiner, author of the autobiography "Te mogen leven!" well known in English as "Selected to Live"?

They certainly had a son Basjan (he appears - spelled that way - in the picture section of Mrs Ader's book) and he would very likely have been born in Winschoten in 1942 as Ds Ader was a minister at nearby Nieuw-Beerta. My guess is that this is the child who is called Hansje in the text of the book, as the younger child, who never saw his father who was killed by the Germans shortly after his birth, was named Dikkie (officially Victor Emanuël).

Received the following anonymous message on my own talk page:

I'm pretty certain he was, as you say, the son of Rev Bastiaan Jan Ader. What I know of Bas Jan Ader the artist is that his father was a clergyman, and that he was from Nieuw-Beerta. If you take those words for facts, i guess that would make it pretty conclusive.

Greetings from Winschoten.

You might check with User:Maberry, she's a librarian at Otis College of Art and Design, where Ader graduated, and might have access to that info. scot 20:14, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I can't remember off-hand, but this is all very well documented in the DVD "Here Is Always Somewhere Else (2007)" Directed by Rene Daalder. Your account sounds familiar though - and would just need to be verified. --Deadchildstar (talk) 17:07, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I can verify for 100% certain that this indeed is the case. She is his mother, and his father was indeed a reverend. Bas Jan Ader´s mother outlived both her husband and son. I did a project on Bas Jan Ader, and talked to his brother, and my collegue interviewed his nanny.

Authenticity[edit]

there seems to be somewhat of an edit war going on based upon the authenticity of the works here. Whatever claims are made need to be referenced so a neutral point of view can be presented Minnaert 17:01, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Whoever keeps putting unsubstantiated rumors, slander, and innuendo on this page needs to stop now. It does not follow Wikipedia guidelines. All references need to be sourced. There needs to be a neutral point of view.Hqknight 09:43, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Picture[edit]

I have lend a picture (slide) of Bas Jan Ader (quite young at the time), of which I have a scan. I will ask the maker if he´s willing to have that picture in the public domain or given a CC license. --DDdW (talk) 19:51, 21 July 2014 (UTC) Got permission, and added the picture! --DDdW (talk) 19:34, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That's great, but you need to put in the file where you got it from. Otherwise it will be deleted.--Nowa (talk) 23:03, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I got it from the photographer, and scanned it for him, and got written permission to set it in the public domain. Where should I add that info? --DDdW (talk) 15:00, 13 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like you put it in the right spot. If not, someone will be sure to point it out  :-) --Nowa (talk) 17:17, 13 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Possible addition?[edit]

At the link for his mother's typewritten poem, the poem stops at "a white body of a man, rocked in the arms of the waves is very small too."

After that, we have these extended lines found quoted here [1] under the video (scroll down) which she includes in her reading [2]:

"What are we in the infinity of ocean and sky?
A small baby at the breast of eternity.
Have you heard of happiness
Springing from a deep well of sorrow?
Of love, springing from pain and despondency, agony and death?
Such is mine."

As well there's this artifact which seemingly relates to nothing else

Psalm 30:2

I take it the last bit is maybe vandalism? I'm not sure what to do with all this... anyone?

Poem removed[edit]

I removed the mother's poem. We don't link to copyright violations, and there was no indication that the user(s) behind the Tumblr page own the copyright to the poem or had permission to use it. Tumblr is not a reliable source, and the statement that the artist's mother wrote the poem (presented as typewritten text on a plain background) is itself questionable.
