Slate France article[edit]

https://www.slate.fr/story/107927/bassel-khartabil-prisonnier-syrien-internet in French contains info not currently in the article, eg about months before detention and projects subject has been involved in, in case anyone wants to go through and add new stuff. I might later from an autotranslation if nobody else gets to it. Mike Linksvayer (talk) 05:24, 10 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, did this happen? We can get some friends to help, and I think there is an english version of that article. Jon Phillips (talk) 04:22, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure, probably worth reading the Slate.fr story again closely and seeing if there's still anything missing from the article. There's a translation of the story at http://jilliancyork.com/2015/10/16/bassel-khartabil-syrian-prisoner-who-lives-and-risks-dying-for-a-free-internet/ Mike Linksvayer (talk) 06:08, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Russian version of the article nominated for deletion[edit]

ru:Википедия:К_удалению/25_ноября_2015#Хартабил, Бассел. The nominator says neither the Russian version nor this English one show notability according to Russian Wikipedia policies. --AVRS (talk) 22:53, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Well, looks like it was deleted. It might be taken naively as a reflection on Russian policy specifically. But more generally it points out how "notability" is a product of "community consensus", also known as "political manipulation", which is true too on this WP (even if less so, perhaps). FeatherPluma (talk) 23:22, 19 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
This article should be resubmitted in Russian. It makes sense that it would be deleted because it is sensitive Syrian topic in Russia. SO the deletion happened when low activity Jon Phillips (talk) 04:23, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Free Bassel[edit]

There is a page on meta about the campaign to ensure Bassel's safe release. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:09, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Andy, can we get that updated? Jon Phillips (talk) 04:23, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I could not find anywhere his username on Wikimedia projects. Does anyone know? NMaia (talk) 02:53, 23 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Jon Phillips: Thanks a lot for the reply. Do you have sources talking about that? ~nmaia d 10:37, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@NMaia: Jon Phillips was a longtime friend of Bassel's and the founding organizer of the Free Bassel campaign. The Guardian, CBC, and Creative Commons, frequently quote and cite Jon as an important source with respect to Bassel's work and his particular involvement with Wikipedia and the Creative Commons. Despite our Wikipedia policies regarding verifiability, you could not have a better source; it's very likely that reliable publication will use Jon's statement here as a trusted fact in any of their stories. Spy accusation[edit]

The article says that Khartabil was detained for "spying for an enemy State". Which of his actions are supposed to be spying? --167.58.96.50 (talk) 13:45, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
