None of the cited sources, nor additional external sources I've searched, provide any information whatsoever that the Confederates "tricked" the Union into thinking the New River Bridge was not destroyed. One source[1] states that the Union burnt the entire wooden structure of the bridge, but did not have the explosives needed to destroy the metal piers, which they had to leave intact. Thus the CS was able to rebuild the bridge relatively quickly (within a couple weeks) by replacing the wooden structure. The mission of the Union was fulfilled - the bridge was destroyed. The fact that the CS was able to rebuild the bridge does not mean the destruction of the bridge was a failure. The Union also destroyed several other bridges on the rail line as well. --Dan East (talk) 21:42, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
