Post town[edit]

I am curious what people write on letters addressed to this town. The post town and county is Lancaster, Lancashire. But it is in Yorkshire! So do people write Lancaster, Yorkshire? That surely cannot be right. It may be worth discussing the town's relationship with Lancashire in the article. --Vince (talk) 12:29, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's all somewhat academic, as the Royal Mail no longer uses counties in addresses. The official address is now, for example, Bentham, LANCASTER, LA2 7DH. The traditional way of dealing with the problem, although I don't know whether this was used in Bentham, would have been to address letters to Bentham, via LANCASTER, Lancashire. It was not an uncommon problem: another example was New Mills in Derbyshire, where the post town was STOCKPORT, which used to be in Cheshire. Letters were traditionally addressed to New Mills, via STOCKPORT, Cheshire. In that case, the Royal Mail has finally caught up with reality, and the official address is now, for example, New Mills, HIGH PEAK, SK22 3EL. Skinsmoke (talk) 18:10, 3 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
