Why the double name?[edit]

Why did they decide to call the diocese "Arundel and Brighton" rather than simply "Arundel", which is where its cathedral has always been located? What is the significance of Brighton? Proteus (Talk) 16:43, 30 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Following the "(Discuss)" link from the multi-move brings me here so I assume this is the place for discussion on all these RC bishops.
Oppose: "Bishop of X" is a specific title, so the upper case "B" seems appropriate even in the disambiguated version of the title which is used as the article title. I note that there are 9 articles with titles "Anglican Bishop of ..." and none with "Anglican bishop of ..." (and vast numbers of redirects from both, mostly to the dioces concerned). PamD, per WP:Other stuff exists and MOS:JOBTITLES, the title is preceded by a modifier and should not be capitalized. Elizium23 (talk) 12:56, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per Elizium23 and MOS:JOBTITLES. "Roman Catholic Bishop of X" is not an unmodified formal title. — BarrelProof (talk) 20:46, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    • "Bishop of X (Roman Catholicism)" might be OK. — BarrelProof (talk) 02:05, 13 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Posts held by a single person at a time are usually capitalised. They are not generic job titles. Point three of MOS:JOBTITLES applies here. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:27, 8 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. The rules given in MOS:JOBTITLES are nonsensical. But the examples provide clearer guidance. All twelve show the job title lower cased. Here is CMOS: "In formal prose and other generic text (as opposed to promotional or ceremonial contexts or a heading), titles are normally lowercased when following a name or used in place of a name." (8.18). CMOS is listed first among the style guides recommmended in our guideline. 5440orSleep (talk) 07:14, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
