[edit] Celtics Mystique
I think a section on "Celtics mystique," tradition, etc., should be added. I'm a die-hard Celtics fan, so if people think this is a good idea, I could help contribute.
[edit] 1997 Draft
I think more should be made of not winning the Tim Duncan sweepstakes 1997 Draft. That, along with Len Bias and Reggie Lewis' untimely deaths has been a major reason why the Celtics have been horrible in the Post-Bird era.
[edit] Name Origins and pronunciation
Where did the Boston Celtics get their name from? I don't mean about the actual Celts or anything like that, but how did this basketball team get their name?
- My predecessor on this page, I imagine it's at least partly related to the Irish population in Boston.
How is their name pronounced? Irish people and Welsh people tend to produce the adjective as /kɛltɪk/, because they perceive that the word isn't a Latin word, and thus shouldn't be subject to the /k/ -> /s/ mapping of the Romance languages. While the Scottish football (soccer) club was named in a moment of Victorian Romance-Latin-worship, and is called /sɛltɪk/.
The name came from owner Walter Brown, apparently the name had roots in an original Celtics team in New York and was chosen due to the large Irish population in Boston. The name is pronounced the same as the Scottish football club.
- Okay, so the Irish, Welsh, and Scottish have there ways of saying things, but in American English we say "celtic" with an initial /k/ sound in every instance I can think of, except this sports team. Anyone know the historical reason that the team name is an anomaly for American English? Even without evidence of the history, shouldn't the anomalous nature of the pronunciation be mentioned in the article? —Quantling (talk | contribs) 14:01, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Recent Drafts/Young Talent
I agree that Ainge has drafted well recently, but do you really think that Marcus Banks, who has been relegated to third-string PG, is a good example of a "successful draft pick?"
On a side note, I think the "Franchise History" section is a bit long, and could be divided into a few sections. Any suggestions? 138.16.27.168 02:38, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Dance Team/Auerbach controversy
Does anybody want to start a little paragraph about how the team will have a dance team for 06-07 and how Red was staunchly opposed to that and is still very involved in preserving traditional elements of the franchise? I know that I've heard quotes like "they'll have a dance team over my dead body!" being attributed to Red.
[edit] colons
is it absolutely necessary to have colons on the basketball hall of famers and not to be forgotten sections? they don't look very good. i'd like to remove them if no one objects.--Alhutch 22:27, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] 2006 NBA Draft
I merged the relevant information (the Telfair trade) into the 2003-present section of the article. The minor trades and picks are non-notable to the Boston Celtics article. Less than 70% of second round draft picks in 2005 played a single minute for an NBA team during the '05-'06 season. The article is long as it is and the draft section is simply not relevant to an article that attempts to give an accurate overview of the organization, its members, and its history. hoopydinkConas tá tú? 04:27, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Rebuilding a contender (2001-present)
Does anyone actually think this is an appropriate header? Pretty presumptuous and optimistic, no? Every single word with the exception of "a" is very debatable...how long has this rebuilding process been going on? One could argue that they've been rebuilding for almost a decade...or for only two seasons. One could argue that they're not rebuilding, but floating around in a non-competitive malaise. I think you can only call it "rebuilding" if there is progress - either in terms of results (more wins) or following a rebuilding plan (get rid of high salaries and draft/trade for youth; drop the headcases; focus on offense versus defense; pick a new star to build around, etc...there are a lot of ways to do it). Perhaps for this past season or two it could be said that they are following some sort of plan (dubiously derailed by injuries), but I can't see it prior to that. How about calling it "The Doc Rivers Era," or "The Wyc Grousbeck Era" or something like that. I would prefer the former, since they are inexplicably extending Doc's contract for another year. Daedulus 18:13, 13 April 2007 (UTC)Daedulus
- I subdivided this into the O'Brien years and the Ainge years, since they're as different from each other as night and day. Djcastel 17:47, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Pronounciation
"While the team name is pronounced "Sell-ticks," the word "Celtic" is pronounced "Kell-tick" in Ireland."
Is there any specific explanation as to why it's normally pronounced wrong? I mean, a lot of people use the pronounciation, but it is still the only place "Celt" or "Celtic" is pronounced beginning with an S-sound. --Ifrit 21:39, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
This may sound silly, but I'm just wondering whether to pronounce their name "Seltics" or "Keltics"? Could that be put in the lead? Wrad 02:58, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
Oh, I see this is already addressed. But could it be in the lead? I'm also curious why it is pronounced different. Wrad 03:00, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
- It's because northerners pronounce everything wrong, including their incorrect pronunciation of "Appalachian". —ᚹᚩᛞᛖᚾᚻᛖᛚᛗ (ᚷᛖᛋᛈᚱᛖᚳ) 00:58, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Paul Pierce
I have no idea how you guys missed this but Paul Pierce's college was Kansas. I'd fix it myself but I'm not established enough to add it in.
In the Pitino Years section, I question the validity of this sentence. Pierce would go on to become the best player ever to grace an NBA court with his presence. Yasgur 15:36, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
- I would probably consider that sentence valid after the 2008 NBA Finals, but I don't meet the requirements to have my opinions count, I agree that sentence should be removed. I5kfun (talk) 04:40, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
I also think this sentence is partisan. Cowboyx 15:28, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Backup positions
It has been reported by Doc Rivers that Tony Allen is going to play the backup point guard position this year, but somebody changed the depth chart and placed Tony at SG again. In any case, Brian Scalabrine is still ahead of Leon Powe in the depth chart, but that can change during the season, or even pre-season. But right now, Powe is the 3rd string PF, House the 2nd string SG and Tony Allen the 2nd string PG. And that should be kept the same way in the Celtics article until the playing time of the players in the next games suggests otherwise. (8-Hype 12:17, 8 October 2007 (UTC))
We may have to swap Tony Allen and Eddie House on the Current Depth Chart. It seems that House is getting more playing time (thus "bench") than Tony Allen ("reserve"). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.117.82.171 (talk) 05:08, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Celtics Logo.gif
Image:Celtics Logo.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

[edit] Boston Celtics on All-Defensive Teams
Is it just my computer giving me trouble or are there no Celtics under "NBA All-Defensive Teams" in "Individual Awards"? There were many Celtics on the All-Defensive Teams, as shown here: http://www.nba.com/history/awards_defensiveteams.html Adarsharon 18:26, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Article length
This article seems absolutely huge. For a start I think that the history should be moved to its own page, with a condensed history remaining here. Dancarney 14:26, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
- I have to agree. I think the excitement that the current season is providing is flooding the page with too much minutiae. Esteban Batista? Dahntay Jones?. Neither even played a regular season game. I think we need to see a little more patience before we add what might very well ammount to historical trivia. Gotta love the enthusiasm though.Mstuczynski (talk) 17:19, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Superstitions
Don't Celt fans consider it a jinx to wear green during games? Is there any other sports team for whom this superstition is prevalent? I'll add something about this when I find some sources to cite... Ellsworth (talk) 15:07, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think so. But if you found something, this would be great. | 8-Hype (talk) 23:10, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
I've grown up in the Boston area my whole life and thats the first I've heard of it. I don't go to enough many Celts games to claim to be an expert, but I think this is just a rumor. I went to the Celts Knicks game earlier this season, and the majority of the crowd was in greenTsurettejr (talk) 23:41, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Jiri Welsch

[edit] Quick Fail GA
Large parts of the article lack sourcing. The introduction could use some expansion Wikipedia:Lead section and some of the sections in the end are stylistically too short and should be rearranged into other sections, new sections, or expanded.User:calbear22 (talk) 20:30, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Can somebody please help me? I am unexperienced at editing, and I need somebody to please do following in Boston Celtics#External links:
- Remove the margins between "Awards and achievements", "NBA Finals Champions Navigation Boxes" and "NBA Finals Broadcasters Navigation Boxes".
- In NBA Finals Broadcasters Navigation Boxes: Remove the margins between the respective navboxes.
- In NBA Finals Broadcasters Navigation Boxes: Set the state of the respective navboxes to collapsed.
Thank you in advance! ● 8~Hype @ 09:12, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Logo
"The Boston Celtics have come out with a new logo for the 1995-96 season, but the image of a leprechaun spinning a basketball has been in use since the early 1950s. The logo was originally designed by Zang Auerbach, the brother of Celtics head coach Red Auerbach. The logo has received numerous tweaks over the years, the latest version, shown here, decorated the leprechaun in a gold vest to celebrate the club's 50th anniversary.[37]"
Tense issues aside, the above quotation is from the Wiki article, but appears to be directly lifted from the reference. My understanding of Wikipedia references suggests that they are not be used in such a way. Am I right? JeffHCross (talk) 01:00, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
You were wrong. The Celtics still used the one-colored leprechaun logo in their first year at the FleetCenter (1995-96). They only debuted the colored version of the leprechaun in 1996-97, at the same time the center court logo on the parquet floor was repainted and refreshed. This is to coincide with not only the NBA's 50th anniversary, but also the Celtics' 50th anniversary [1] Ralphierce (talk) 10:00, 14 December, 2008 (UTC)
Please don't change again the logos section of the Boston Celtics, which is the right year of issuance of the updated Celtics logo. Ralphierce (talk) 10:00, 13 April, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] 2nd highest margin of victory
I believe that tonight's game is the second highest margin of victory in NBA Finals history. The largest margin was 42 points; tonight's was 39, according to the broadcast by ABC. Dr. Cash (talk) 04:08, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
