The Italian company (and the reference to Eco)[edit]

The advert (right) shows that there, is or was, a company based in Milan called Achille Brioschi & C. which had the exclusive concession for the sale of Farina Gegenüber eau de cologne in Italy and its colonies. This prompts two questions: was it this company, rather than the American one described in this article, to which Eco referred in The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana ? and is/was there a relationship between the two companies? O.K., I think my edits to the article, subsequent upon reading the bio in the DBI and the relevant section of Eco’s novel, have answered my own questions. I think the article is still rather confused, though. The American product seems to be the original fizzy-drink-making powder, repurposed as a medicine, rather than the medicinal cachet. Our description of the cachet is, I suspect, really a description of the original effervescente. All rather puzzling…. Ian Spackman (talk) 12:51, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
