Size of the Hide[edit]

I know Maitland's work is more than a century old, but he seems to argue for a hide of 120 acres, not 30. 173.66.211.53 (talk) 04:03, 27 July 2013 (UTC)

I believe that you are right! Initially the size of the hide varied according to value and resources of the land itself. In Sussex for example a hide was much smaller than other kingdoms/ counties. Over time the hide was given a set acreage and I believe that the most common size in use was that given by Maitland ie: 120 acres as in Cambridgeshire. However other areas such as Dorset and Wiltshire used units based on 40 to 48 acres. For references check out Maitland pp 416-62, Charles-Edwards Kinship, Status and the Origin of the Hide in Past & Present No. 56 (Aug., 1972), pp. 3-33, Lapidge AS Encyclopedia pp. 238-239, Brandons South Saxons pp. 194-195 to mention a few.
