Large consistent carbides do improve toughness of the steel but not where "The Edge" is concerned. Large carbides tend to chip out in large chunks especially if the heat treat was not done right. (steel too hard)
There are large inconsistencies in s30v heat treat quality between manufacturers and within the same manufacturer.
