Am I a pussy ear or a cat's ear?

Can someone help me identify this flower? I didn't realize there were cat's ear and pussy ear flowers. I presume it is one or the other??? It is growing in the hills above Ashland, Oregon if that helps.ChildofMidnight (talk) 04:48, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Of the half-dozen Calochortus species pictured at Carr's Oregon Flora Project, this most resembles [1], which is Calochortus tolmiei. Hopefully you have some closeups and and a side view to help make the id more secure? Stan (talk) 15:09, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Nope. That one crap photo is as good as it gets. It's either tolmiei or elegans [2]. ChildofMidnight (talk) 05:32, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, yeah. FNA [3] says distinguishing characteristic is whether the stems are branched with leaves at the junction (entry 13 in the key). There is a faded bloom and stem down and right, but with the foreshortening it's hard to tell what it's connected to. When I see an unfamiliar plant, I'll take a dozen photos, including undersides and bases and such, one never knows which bits will be the key to identification. Given the location cited - "hills above Ashland - it is almost certainly C. tolmiei, which is common in that area.Grobinett (talk) 21:55, 28 May 2009 (UTC) 28 May 2009[reply]
